    (13/6/1900, Austria - 1/4/1961, USA)
The Seventh Cross, novel by Anna Seghers (Le Petit Journal, 9/1/1944)
William M. Sharp was an Austrian cartoonist, who eventually became successful in the United States. Sharp attended the Academy for Arts and Industry in Lemberg, Austria, and he began his career as a designer of stained-glass windows and mural painter. After serving in the German army in World War I, he became a newspaper artist in Berlin. His anti-nazi cartoons eventually made him leave the country and settle in the United States in 1934. In the States, he started out making courtroom sketches for the New York Mirror and eventually became a staff cartoonist for Esquire. He additionally contributed to The New York Times Magazine, Life, Collier's, Coronet and The New York Post. Sharp also illustrated several novels, among others by Hemmingway and Thomas Mann. He was one of the main illustrators for the comic adaptations of novels that King Features distributed in cooperation with the Book-of-the-Month Club. Sharp illustrated 'The Seventh Cross' (1942), 'Combined Operations' (1943), 'Into Occupied France and Out' (1943) and 'Betrayal from the East' (1944).

William Woolverton Sharp
William Woolverton Sharp was born January 16, 1826, in the old village in this county, where he grew to manhood. He was a fair scholar, fond of reading, and his penmanship was remarkably clear and graceful. He taught school during the winter months, attending college in the summer season, and reading medicine with Dr. Matthew Clark.
In 1847 he was married to a Miss Margaret Sharp, of Washington county (who was no relation to his family). He died several years ago, and the obituary, written by his friend and comrade, James P. Sayer, reads thus: Dr. Sharp occupied a high position in his profession, his apt mechanical ability enabling him to perform difficult surgical operations with ease. In the sick room he was prompt and careful.
In September, 1862, when the war cloud was darkest, he was commissioned as assistant surgeon of the One Hundred and Fortieth

Mr. William Sharp William Sharp was what he called a "closet veteran." A closet veteran was a term he used to describe veterans who wouldn't talk about their battles to anyone. However, Bill regretted never talking about his battles to his father in law, who was in WWII, before he died. His reason to start talking was when someone was on "Sixty Minutes" and said that there were no concentration camps. Another reason for him to start talking was when he heard people say that Truman should not have dropped the Atom bomb. That was a sore spot for William. Germans had firebombed London and killer more people than the Atom bomb. William was warned by his brother, who participated in the massacre of Pearl Harbor, to not enlist in the military. Inevitably, three months after he graduated from Merchantville High School, he was drafted in August of 1943. His first division of basic training was in the 65th at Camp Shelby. He went in September of 1943. He fought with the 26th division, known as the Yankee Division. His training was in infantry, but he was assigned to a Canon Company. After a day's worth of training, the infantrymen had to clean out their canons. For a long time they didn't even fire the canons, but each day they had to change the oil. He remembers, "We had to keep those darn canons clean."
