Shaw, Anna Howard
(b. Feb. 14, 1847, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, Eng.d. July 2, 1919, Moylan, Pa., U.S.), American minister, lecturer, and, with Susan B. Anthony , one of the chief leaders of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, founded in 1890. Her immigrant parents (of Scottish descent) brought her to the United States when she was four, and she grew up in Lawrence, Mass., and on a farm near Big Rapids, Mich. A precocious child, she began teaching in a frontier schoolhouse when she was 15; in 1870 she delivered her first sermon and in 1871 was licensed as a Methodist preacher. From 1873 to 1875 she studied at Albion College, Albion, Mich., and in 1878 graduated from the divinity school of Boston University, the only woman in her class. She then sought a permanent appointment over a congregation, but the New England Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church not only refused to ordain her because of her sex but also revoked her license to preach. She thereupon turned to the Methodist Protestant Church and was ordained as that church's first woman minister in 1880. In the next few years she preached, gave lectures on temperance and woman suffrage, and secured an M.D. from Boston University (1886). In 1885 she resigned her pastorates and took up full-time the cause of suffrage and temperance. In 1892, when Susan B. Anthony became president of the newly formed National American Woman Suffrage Movement (a merger of two previous associations), Shaw became vice president (1892-1904) and later (1904-15) served as president. Throughout the period she was a familiar figure in demonstrations, conferences, congressional hearings, and lecture circuits, speaking in every state of the Union. She also performed home-front war work (1917-18) and received the Distinguished Service Medal.
