Margaret Sidney (1844-1924) [pseudonym for Harriett Mulford Stone] , American author wrote The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew The Pepper family would soon become beloved by readers all over America. Young people avidly followed the adventures of Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie. While faced with many plausible trials and obstacles they remain eternally optimistic in the face of adversity, and reflect the real life issues of so many of their readers. Their universally appealing wholesome values and lives are not burdened with a heavy moralising tone which was present in many other popular works of the day. Harriett Mulford Stone was born on 22 June 1844 in New Haven, Connecticut. Her father was Sidney Mason Stone, an architect. The Stone family often traveled in rural New England, such visits providing material and inspiration for the young and creative Harriet's future stories and characters. Sidney started her career writing short stories, the first being "Polly Pepper's Chicken Pie" which she submitted to the Boston children's magazine

Harriett Mulford Stone was born in New Haven Connecticut . in 1844. In 1878, at the age of 34, she began sending short stories to Wide Awake , a children's magazine in Boston . Two of her stories, "Polly Pepper's Chicken Pie" and "Phronsie Pepper's New Shoes", proved to be very popular with readers. Daniel Lothrop , the editor of the magazine, requested that Stone write more. The success of Harriett's short stories prompted her to write the now-famous Five Little Peppers series. This series was first published in 1881, the year that Stone married Daniel Lothrop. Daniel had founded the D. Lothrop Company of Boston, who published Harriett's books under her pseudonym, Margaret Sidney.

"'Margaret Sidney'
The Writer of the Famous Polly Pepper Books"
By Norma Bright Carson
"You mustn't say that I created Polly Pepper. I didn't; She created herself."
So spoke Mrs. Daniel Lothrop, otherwise "Margaret Sidney," whose "Five Little Peppers" are surely as much at home among American children as Santa Claus and the Teddy Bear. We had gone out to Old Concord to see Mrs. Lothrop in her own environmentthe Concord she loves, and for which she has done so much to bring upon her in return the responsive affection of its people.
My own first recollections of the Pepper family are inseparably associated with an attack of scarlet fever, the confinement resulting from which was enlivened by the single book, The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Its consignment to the firewhen its days of usefulness were overleft me inconsolable, but it also gave Polly. Ben. Joel. David and Phronsie a staunch friend and a loyal adherent.
However, to come back to the lady who has made the Peppers famous
It was this natural aptitude for "making up" stories that was manifested in the many pictures which Mrs. Lothrop would cut out of papers and magazines while she was still very young. Every clipping represented some exercise of the imagination. and they were hoarded as the dearest treasures. We suspect that Harriett Stone was, in her own way, a good deal like Polly Pepper herself, with her story-telling faculty and her lively imagination, that could invest the ordinary things of life with a happy atmosphere.
