Simms, W. Gilmore.
William Gilmore Simms, novelist, was born in Charleston, South Carolina, April 17, 1806, the son of William Gilmore Simms and his first wife Harriet Ann Singleton. After his mother's death in 1808 he was raised by his maternal grandmother while his father went to the frontier of Tennessee. He was admitted to the bar but never practiced, In 1826 he was married to Anna Malcolm Giles and turned to newspaper work, and was part owner and editor of the City Gazette. On the death of his wife in 1832 he went to New York and there published his first novel, "Martin Faber," although he had previously published several volumes of poems. He returned to South Carolina in 1835, where he married Chevillette Roach the next year and went to live on her estate in the southern part of the state. He served in the State Legislature from 1844 to 1846. His wife died in 1863, and later the Northern armies burned his home. He died June 11, 1870. REFERENCES: W. P. Trent

Description: Redfield,, 1856. 1st edition, (Mostly All First Editions), mostly published by Redfield (13 volumes by Redfield, 7 by various other authors), dates range from 1827 to 1856, all volumes are red half leather bindings with marbled boards and five raised bands (someone has carefully collected Simms books and bound them uniformly). All of the books are in very good shape, clean and attractive, and all are internally tight with solid bindings. Spines are all darkened (so that red looks like maroon), light wear to corners, previous owner's bookplate affixed to pastedown endpapers, dime size chip to top of spine of two volumes... otherwise an excellent set overall of a very hard to find author. Gen. Marion in His Swamp Encampment Inviting a British Officer to Dinner
    Image
    Background Notes
General Francis Marion (1732-1795) was born and died in South Carolina. He grew up and lived on a farm his entire life, aside from his enlistment time. He was known as a brave and courteous man who was referred to as the "Swamp Fox" for his guerilla war tactics through the swamp marshes. He began his military career in 1756, and rose through the ranks in the Continental Army, while battling the British in the south during the Revolutionary War. It is said that in late 1780, a British officer requested a meeting with Marion, at his Snow Island, South Carolina, headquarters, to discuss the exchange of prisoners. Marion graciously invited him to dinner of roasted sweet potatoes, and the young officer accepted. The image easily portrays Marion's generosity at this event. (1) Originally a painting by John Blake White, General Marion Inviting a British Officer to Dinner is a significant image because it is one of the first to represent nationalism, and to portray a southern military figure so prominently. Before this time, historical imagery was regionally based, and focusing on New England. Because of this, the original painting by White (ca. 1837), an attorney and painter from South Carolina, was the first chosen to be published by the Apollo Association. (2)
