SMOLLETT, TOBIAS GEORGE (1721-1771). Novelist, 2nd s. of Archibald S., of Dalquhurn, Dumbartonshire, and ed. at Glasgow, proceeded to London in 1739 with the view of having a tragedy, The Regicide , put on the stage, in which, however, he failed. In this disappointment he took service as surgeon's mate on one of the vessels of the Carthagena expedition, 1741, an experience which he turned to account in his novels. On his return he settled in London, and endeavoured to acquire practice as a physician, but was not very successful, and having discovered where his talent lay, he thenceforth devoted himself to literature. Roderick Random appeared in 1748, The History of an Atom Peregrine Pickle in 1751, Ferdinand, Count Fathom in 1753, Sir Lancelot Greaves in 1766, and Humphrey Clinker , generally considered his best novel, in 1770. Besides these works, however, he translated Voltaire, wrote a History of England in continuation of Hume's, an Ode to Independence , travels and satires, and contributed to various periodicals. He was repeatedly involved in acrimonious controversy, and on one occasion fined and imprisoned for a libel, which, with various private misfortunes, embittered his life, and he

@import url(../index.css); Smollett, Tobias George Practical Reference Library Smol'lett, TOBIAS GEORGE (1721-1771), a novelist and miscellaneous writer, born near Dumbarton, Scotland. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and was apprenticed to a surgeon. His interest, however, was rather in literature than in surgery, and in 1739 he went to England with a tragedy, The Regicide, which he was unable to have performed. After some years' service as surgeon's mate, on board the Cumberland, he returned to England and again took up literature. The first of his novels, Roderick Random, appeared in 1848, and its success was immediate and great. Among his later works the most noteworthy are Peregrine Pickle and Humphrey Clinker. His novels, carelessly constructed, often coarse and usually marked by a humor which descends frequently into burlesque, depend for their interest largely on their thrilling scenes and on their occasional admirable character drawing.

SUMMARY The eighteenth-century picaresque masterpiece- now in a new edition
A triumph of English satire, "Humphry Clinker" was published just three months prior to its author's death in 1771. At its heart is Matthew Bramble, a gout-ridden misanthrope who travels Britain with his nephew, niece, spinster sister, and manservant, the trusty Humphry Clinker. In a narrative peopled with pimps, drunkards, and con men, Bramble's pessimistic views on the world's degeneracy- and his eagerness to express them-betray the author's belief that his countrymen were suffering from an acute lack of sense and sobriety. Boisterous and keenly observant, "Humphry Clinker" is a delicious send-up of eighteenth-century society. SUMMARY The eighteenth-century picaresque masterpiece- now in a new edition
