Biography
Dutch Jewish rationalist. Baruch or Benedict de Spinoza was born in Amsterdam into a distinguished Jewish family, exiled from Spain and living in the relative religious freedom of the Netherlands . He attended the Jewish school, and became learned in the work of Jewish and Arabic theologians. However, contact with dissident Christian movements, and with the with the scientific and philosophical thought of Descartes , led Spinoza to distance himself from orthodox life, and in 1656 he was deemed a heretic, cast out of the synagogue, and cursed with all the curses of the firmament. For a short time Spinoza was exiled from Amsterdam, but he returned and began a life supporting himself by grinding lenses and teaching. In 1660 he moved to Voorburg and then on to the Hague , where he lived with great fugality on a small pension. In 1672 Spinoza undertook a small diplomatic mission to the invading French army, but on his return was under suspicion as a spy, and narrowly escaped being killed by the mob. Spinoza lived out his remaining years in the same frugal state, writing and corresponding. He died of phthisis, possibly brought on by his trade as a lens-grinder. There remain numerous testimonies to his simplicity, virtue, charm, and courage.
Works
After the exile from Amsterdam he returned and wrote the Short Treaties on God, Man, and his Well Being

[Notice to the Reader.] (This notice to the reader was written by the editors of the Opera Postuma in 1677. Taken from Curley, Note 3, at end)
*This Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect etc., which we give you here, kind reader, in its unfinished [that is, defective] state, was written by the author many years ago now. He always intended to finish it. But hindered by other occupations, and finally snatched away by death, he was unable to bring it to the desired conclusion. But since it contains many excellent and useful things, which - we have no doubt - will be of great benefit to anyone sincerely seeking the truth, we did not wish to deprive you of them. And so that you would be aware of, and find less difficult to excuse, the many things that are still obscure, rough, and unpolished, we wished to warn you of them. Farewell.*

Spinoza, Benedictus de (1632-1677) published in The Encyclopedia of Transcendentalism . Wesley T. Mott, ed. New York: Greenwood Press, 1996. Spinoza, Benedictus de (1632-1677), was an objective, impersonal thinker who attempted a level of systematic thought that is little matched in the entire Western tradition. Born in Amsterdam, where he lived until 1660, he earned his living as a lens grinder, an appropriate occupation for one so concerned with truth and clarity. A Jew, he was expelled from the synagogue for heresy in 1656. He turned down a chair of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1673 and died of consumption in Voorburg in 1677. Spinoza's main philosophical goal was the search for a good that would "so fill the mind that all dependence on contingent circumstance and uncertainty would end." Like Descartes, he used a geometrical method in this quest. He believed that there is only one substance in the universe, and therefore only one cause or ultimate explanation for all existence. His most famous phrasing of this concept was deus sive natura , "God or Nature", because for him the two were interchangeable. He greatly influenced German Idealists such as Goethe, who placed heavy emphasis on Spinoza's theological content. Spinoza's attacks against the Cartesian mind/body dichotomy and Scholastic theology's god/created-world dichotomy are for him necessary arguments arising from the first principles of the universe. His recognition of humanity as part of Nature, or part of God, enjoined him to take a Stoic ethical approach, wherein the greatest joy is a human nature that is perfectly aware and accepting of its place in and unity with the universe.

Improvement Of The Understanding by Spinoza, Benedictus de Page 9 the chain of reasoning by which they are supported; he will then be no longer in doubt that we have attained to the truth. (2) This is why I have as above.
[47] (1) If there yet remains some sceptic, who doubts of our primary truth, and of all deductions we make, taking such truth as our standard, he must either be arguing in bad faith, or we must confess that there are men in complete mental blindness either innate or due to misconceptions - that is, to some external influence. (2) Such persons are not conscious of themselves. (3) If they affirm or doubt anything, they know not that they affirm or doubt: they say that they know nothing, and they say that they are ignorant of the very fact of their knowing nothing. (4) Even this they do not affirm absolutely, they are afraid of confessing that they exist, so long as they know nothing; in fact, they ought to remain dumb, for fear of haply supposing which should smack of truth.
[48] (1) Lastly, with such persons, one should not speak of sciences: for, in what relates to life and conduct, they are compelled by necessity to suppose that they exist, and seek their own advantage, and often affirm and deny, even with an oath. (2) If they deny, grant, or gainsay, they know not that they deny, grant, or gainsay, so that they ought to be regarded as automata, utterly devoid of intelligence.
