To the Non-Slaveholders of the South:
A Plan for the Abolition of Slavery (1858)
by Lysander Spooner (1808-1887)
TO THE NON-SLAVEHOLDERS OF THE SOUTH. PAS.1 We present to you herewith “A Plan for the Abolition of Slavery,” and solicit your aid to carry it into execution. PAS.2 Your numbers, combined with those of the Slaves, will give you all power. You have but to use it, and the work is done. PAS.3 The following self-evident principles of justice and humanity will serve as guides to the measures proper to be adopted. These principles are – PAS.4 That the Slaves have a natural right to their liberty. PAS.5 That they have a natural right to compensation (so far as the property of the Slaveholders and their abettors can compensate them) for the wrongs they have suffered. PAS.6 That so long as the governments, under which they live, refuse to give them liberty or compensation, they have the right to take it by stratagem or force. PAS.7 That it is the duty of all, who can, to assist them in such an enterprise. PAS.8

No Treason, No. 1
By rbarnett - Posted on 04 August 2009 NO TREASON. No. 1. BY LYSANDER SPOONER BOSTON: PUBLISHED BY THE AUTHOR, No. 14 Bromfield Street. Entered according to Act of congress, in the year 1867, By LYSANDER SPOONER, in the Clerk's office of the District Court of the United States, for the District of Massachusetts. [*iii] INTRODUCTORY. The question of treason is distinct from that of slavery; and is the same that it would have been, if free States, instead of slave States, had seceded. On the part of the North, the war was carried on, not to liberate slaves, but by a government that had always perverted and violated the Constitution, to keep the slaves in bondage; and was still willing to do so, if the slaveholders could be thereby induced to stay in the Union. The principle, on which the war was waged by the North, was simply this: That men may rightfully be compelled to submit to, and support, a government that they do not want; and that resistance, on their part, makes them traitors and criminals. No principle, that is possible to be named, can be more self-evidently false than this; or more self-evidently fatal to all political freedom. Yet it triumphed in the field, and is now assumed to be established. If it really be established, the number of slaves, instead of having been diminished by the war, has been greatly increased; for a man, thus subjected to a government that he does not want, is a slave. And there is no difference, in principle - but only in degree - between political and chattel slavery. The former, no less than the latter, denies a man's ownership of himself and the products of his labor; and [*iv] asserts that other men may own him, and dispose of him and his property, for their uses, and at their pleasure.

THE SCIENCE OF JUSTICE.
Section I. NL.1.1.1
The science of mine and thine – the science of justice – is the science of all human rights; of all a man’s rights of person and property; of all his rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. NL.1.1.2 It is the science which alone can tell any man what he can, and cannot, do; what he can, and cannot, have; what he can, and cannot, say, without infringing the rights of any other person. NL.1.1.3 It is the science of peace; and the only science of peace; since it is the science which alone can tell us on what conditions mankind can live in peace, or ought to live in peace, with each other. Lysander (d. 395 BC ) was the commander of the Sparta n fleet which was victorious against the Athenians at Aegospotami in 405 BC . The following year, he took Athens itself, bringing the Peloponnesian War to an end. In many of the cities formerly belonging to the Athenian Empire , he set up "decarchies" of oligarchists , but in following this policy he eventually ran afoul of the Spartan government, who restored democracy in Athens and modified his decarchy system. Later he invaded Boeotia from Phocis in the Corinthian War , but was surprised and killed at Haliartus . A descendant of the same name is mentioned as a player in Spartan politics at the time of Agis III Ancient Spartans

    Lysander Spooner quote
s The principle that the majority have a right to rule the minority, practically resolves all government into a mere contest between two bodies of men, as to which of them shall be masters, and which of them slaves; a contest, that however bloody can, in the nature of things, never be finally closed, so long as man refuses to be a slave. Lysander Spooner quote s And the men who loan money to governments, so called, for the purpose of enabling the latter to rob, enslave, and murder their people, are among the greatest villains that the world has ever seen. And they as much deserve to be hunted and killed (if they cannot otherwise be got rid of) as any slave traders, robbers, or pirates that ever lived. Lysander Spooner quote s The Rothschilds, and that class of money-lenders of whom they are the representatives and agents - men who never think of lending a shilling to their next-door neighbors, for purposes of honest industry, unless upon the most ample security, and at the highest rate of interest - stand ready, at all times, to lend money in unlimited amounts to those robbers and murderers, who call themselves governments, to be expended in shooting down those who do not submit quietly to being robbed and enslaved.' Lysander Spooner quote s And the so-called sovereigns, in these different governments, are simply the heads, or chiefs, of different bands of robbers and murderers.

    Acton, Lord
Acton was against "programmes of reaction" and thought that there could be great reliance on those institutions that came about as the result of slow evolution. That, ultimately, what was to be trusted were those "changes arising from special historical situations rather than from the minds of presumptuous men."

    Bastiat, Frédéric
Bastiat was of the view that those who subscribe to socialism subscribe to putting in place mechanisms, a philanthropic tyranny, which would but force the human race (a futile effort) to behave as the social engineers think the human race ought to behave as opposed to how it behaves by nature.
    Bentham, Jeremy
In Bentham's writings, politicians, beginning with those of the early 19th century, found legitimization in their most favoured activity: the business of making laws; and, they have been doing it in great quantities ever since. Bentham the business Bentham figured that laws should be socially useful and not merely reflect the status quo; he thought it to be a "sacred truth" that "the greatest happiness of the greatest number is the foundation of morals and legislation."

    Lysander Spooner
    by Wendy McElroy
by Wendy McElroy The modern reader knows Spooner from the reprints of his work. Many of them include a photograph that reflects a sense of the inner man. The photo echoes a description Tucker once offered of his mentor. He wrote, ... A visitor at the Boston Athenaeum Library ... might have noticed ... the stooping figure of an aged man, bending over a desk piled high with dusty volumes of history, jurisprudence, political science, and constitutional law.... Had the old man chanced to raise his head for a moment, the visitor would have seen, framed in long and snowy hair and beard, one of the finest, kindliest, sweetest, strongest, grandest faces that ever gladdened the eyes of man. At 25, Spooner went to work in the office of the Registrar of Deeds in Worcester, a nearby town. There, a growing passion for legal theory led him to the law offices of John Davis and Charles Allen, both of whom were well-respected and influential jurists in Massachusetts. They became his mentors. ... Already the details and formalities and absurdities and quackeries ... seemed but so much cobweb which he must brush away in order to obtain a closer view of those fundamental veracities and realities which he called the principles of natural justice....
