Hello, I wanted to know if I can square a negative number..? Thank You,
Susana Hi Susana, Yes, you can square a negative number. In fact, any number at all can be squared, even numbers like pi and 0. This is because to square a number just means to multiply it by itself. For example, (-2) squared is (-2)(-2) = 4. Note that this is positive because when you multiply two negative numbers you get a positive result. You may be confused about whether you can square a negative number because what you can't do is take the square root of a negative number. This is because if a negative number had a square root, you would have to find a number that when you multiply it by itself, the result would come out negative. This can't happen because either that number would be positive and a positive times a positive is positive, or that number would be negative and a negative times a negative is also positive. Only a positive times a negative (or a negative times a positive) will result in a negative answer and then those numbers would not be the same (because they have different signs) and so they could not be square roots. Hope this helps

Building and Framing Perfectly Square Walls
You're Here: When laying out wall plates and snapping chalk lines for the location of walls; it is critical to have the walls square with one another. If you skip this step you may end up with out of square kitchens, bedrooms or even a basment wall
Problems you will encounter with out of square walls:
    • Flooring with a pattern or tile that does not fit or look properly Out of square drywall Mis-aligned walls Trim that does not fit properly Cabinets that won't fit together properly
The best method is to check all lines and walls for square prior to building and installing them. It will save you a lot of headache down the road. Just think of your walls as a right triangle. Right triangles are on a 90 degree angle. This is the perfect angle for walls.
This is called the Pythagorean Theory. You will be finding the hypotenuse of a square. Look at the right triangle above. It has an A, B and C side. The formula to find C - which would be the diagonal measurement you will need to check your wall for square- is A + B = C
On our triangle above: if A is 3 and B is 4 than C would be 5. The formula is (3x3)=9 + (4x4)=16 which = 25 and the square root of 25 =

How To Square A Foundation
The front wall line, parallel to the street and leveled to grade, remains unchanged. Rule 1. From the intersection of the lines at the established corners of the building, measure 6' on one line and 8' on the intersecting line and adjust the side line so the hypotenuse , or measurement between 6' and 8' will be 10' (fig. 5). With every ad- Fig. 5 Fig. 5 To Square A Foundation justment of the line, remeasure from the intersection of the two lines until the measurements are exactly 6', 8' and 10' and the lines will be at a perfect right angle or square (fig. 5). Rule 2. Take a steel tape-line and measure diagonally to the opposite corners, then reverse the tape-line to the two opposite corners, and adjust the lines until the measurements are the same and the lines will be squared. This rule is reliable in any building where the measurements are taken equal distances on the side lines from the two front corners and both ends of line are the same width.

Search MatheMUSEments Magic Squares By Ivars Peterson Muse , November/December 2003, p. 32-33. Do you have a lucky number? In ancient China, people believed that a special arrangement of nine numbers in a square was especially lucky. They engraved this pattern on stones or medallions that were worn as charms to ward off evil or bring good fortune. Here's the pattern. Can you tell what's special about it? Notice it contains all the numbers from 1 to 9. Better yet, the numbers in each row, column, and diagonal add up to 15. Arrangements of numbers that add up to the same total in every row, column, and diagonal are known as magic squares. Melancholia , an engraving by the German artist Albrecht Dürer, includes a famous magic square. The rows, columns, and main diagonals all sum to 34. The magic square is hanging on the wall to the upper right. Not only do the rows, columns, and diagonals total 34, so do the numbers in the corner squares and the numbers in the central four squares. Can you find other combinations within the square that add to 34? There are several. For example, If you divide the four-by-four square into four two-by-two squares, each of those squares will add up to 34. What's more, the numbers in the middle bottom squares read 1514, the year Dürer made the engraving.
