Living to Work or Working to Live:
Advice for the Dotcom Generation
An essay in hypertext by Scott Bidstrup "The shepherd always tries to persuade the sheep that their interest and his own are the same."
Stendhal (1783-1842)
A s I sit writing this, my hands are sticky and smelly. I've been cutting devil's vine down from the chainlink fence surrounding my horse pasture, and it's a really nasty job. The vine, a noxious weed common here in southern Arizona, quickly grows up through the wire of the fence, and entangles itself throughout the chainlink. It's difficult to cut down, because it is a tough vine that has a latex sap that is as sticky as pine gum and it reeks terribly. Once it is on your hands, you can't get it off, not with fuel oil, not even with gasoline. It's there until it wears away. I suppose you think at this point that I'm going to tell you I love doing that kind of hard manual labor. Actually, I don't. I really hate cutting down devil's vine. There are other things I hate about maintaining my property, too, such as filling in gopher holes before I can irrigate the citrus, cutting down the Russian thistle, a very thorny noxious weed, and having to rake the horse manure in the pasture. But I do them because they're a necessary part of having something I enjoy. And that is the privilege of having a large horse property, which makes possible the opportunity to ride at my leisure. The hard work I do to maintain this property makes it possible to sit on my back porch, sip freshly squeezed orange juice (vastly better than the nasty stuff the grocery store sells), and watch while the cat stalks a young jackrabbit through the bushes. Or going for a saddle ride up through the hills near my home. Or having friends over for an afternoon barbeque and swim in the pool.

(1783-1842) born on Jan 23 French novelist. "He was a leading literary figure best known for psychological and political insight in "The Red and the Black," 1830." Share It is the nobility of their style which will make our writers of 1840 unreadable forty years from now.
"I call "crystallization" that action of the mind that discovers fresh perfections in its beloved at every turn of events." Only great minds can afford a simple style. The man of genius is he and he alone who finds such joy in his art that he will work at it come hell or high water. The shepherd always tries to persuade the sheep that their interests and his own are the same.

Stendhal (1783-1842) - Pseudonym of Marie-Henri Beyle One of the most original French writers of the first half of the 19th century, who played a major role in the development of the modern novel. Stendhal is best known for his masterpieces LE ROUGE ET LE NOIR (1830) and LA CHARTREUSE DE PARME (1839), sharp and passionate chronicles of the intellectual and moral climate of France after Napoleon's defeat. Stendhal also wrote travel books, literature and art reviews, and biographies about such composers as W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn. Stendhal's subjects are often melodramatic, but they form a fascinating frame for his psychologically deep stories of selfishness and different paths towards self-discovery. "A novel is a mirror that strolls along a highway. Now it reflects the blue of the skies, now the mud puddles underfoot." (from Le Rouge et le Noir Stendhal was exiled from Milan by Metternich's police. In 1821 he settled again in Paris, trying to make his name in the salons. During this period he had an affair with countess Clémentine Curial, who wrote 215 letters in two years to her lover. In Milan he had an unhappy love affair with Matilde Dembowski. In 1822 Stendhal published DE L'AMOUR (On Love), which was according to Ford Madox Ford "the dryest book about love that was ever written". It was based on the psychology of Destutt de Tracy. Stendhal regarded himself as a disciple, and perhaps borrowed from him the classificatory, cataloguing spirit with which he started the book. In

Biography
Born in Grenoble, France, he had a miserable childhood in stifling provincial France, hating his unimaginative father and mourning his mother who died when he was small. His closest friend was his younger sister, Pauline. The military and theatrical worlds of the First French Empire were a revelation to Beyle. He travelled extensively in Germany and was part of

Stendhal (1783-1842)
L'auteur

The Red and the Black
The Red and the Black is the story of Julien Sorel , the aesthete son of a carpenter in the fictional French village of Verrières, and his attempts to overcome his poor birth through posturing and telling people what they want to hear. The novel comprises two “books,” but each book has two major stories within it. Book II chronicles Julien’s time in Paris with the family of M. de la Mole. Julien tries to participate in the high society of Paris, but the nobles look down on him as something of a novelty – a poor-born intellectual. Julien, meanwhile, finds himself torn between his ambitions to rise in society and his disgust at the base materialism and hypocrisy of the Parisian nobility. The last few chapters show Julien in prison, reconsidering all of his actions over the three years during which the story takes place and considering his place in the world and the nature of society. Mme. de Rênal forgives Julien, and she and Mathilde both attempt to bribe and cajole local officials to overturn Julien’s death sentence. Julien’s affections, meanwhile, have returned to Mme. de Rênal. The novel closes with Julien’s execution; Mme. de Rênal, who pledged to Julien that she would not take her own life and that she would care for Mathilde’s baby, dies three days later, most likely of grief.
