Biography
Scottish writer, novelist and poet whose stories are noted for adventure and imagination. Some of his most famous works are "Treasure Island" published in 1883, "A Child’s Garden of Verses" 1885, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Kidnapped" 1886. A verbose person, Stevenson wrote down everything including minutia. In 1878 he traveled by emigrant ship and train to California where he met and married Fanny Osbourne, then settled for a time in Saranac, NY, returning to Scotland in 1883. Collaborating with W. E. Henley, Stevenson wrote a few dramas in the 1880’s. In 1888 the family set out for the South Seas and settled in Vailima, Samoa, three miles from the town of Apia, where he temporarily recovered his health. He wrote "The Master of Ballantrae" in 1989 and "A Footnote to History" about the Pacific Islands and the affect of British colonialism was published in 1892. "Stevenson, A Life" was written by Graham Balfour and published in 1901 and was followed by several other biographies. "Selected Letters of Robert Louis Stevenson" edited by Ernest Mehew for Yale University Press was published in 1994. John Singer Sargent painted some portraits of him.

Stevenson, Robert Louis Biography
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, poet, and author of fiction and travel books, known especially for his novels of adventure. Stevenson's characters often prefer unknown hazards to everyday life of the Victorian society. His most famous study of the abysmal depths of personality is THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1886). Many of Stevenson's stories are set in colorful locations, they have also horror and supernatural elements. Arguing against realism, Stevenson underlined the "nameless longings of the reader", the desire for experience. "But we are so fond of life that we have no leisure to entertain the terror of death. It is a honeymoon with us all through, and none of the longest. Small blame to us if we give our whole hearts to this glowing bride of ours, to the appetities, to honour, to the hungry curiosity of the mind, to the pleasure of the eyes in nature, and the pride of our own nimble bodies." (from 'Aes Triplex') The Edinburgh University Magazine (1871) and The Portofolio In a attempt to improve his health, Stevenson travelled on the Continent and in the Scottish Highland. However, traveling on boats was not always easy for him. In letter, written on his journey across the Atlantic in 1879, he complained: "I have a strange, rather horrible, sense of the sea before me, and can see no further into future. I can say honestly I have at this moment neither a regret, a hope, a fear or an inclination; except a mild one for a bottle of good wine which I resist". Later Stevenson spent much time in warmer countries. These experiences provided much material for his writings.

To this wonderful book I owe the confirmation of my imagination. As a child I must have heard or read some pirate stories and we played pirate games often. Then in the last year of primary school some muse prompted our teacher to read this book to us last class every Friday. It was wonderful! I could imagine that steamy island, those skeletons, Flint, Long John Silver, the parrot, and Ben Gunn who had survived on his own for years there. I even dreamt about this story. Such an imaginative yarn. I have read it at intervals throughout my life and it gets better each time. What a story teller Stevenson was! Submitted by Brendan
In an age of declining literacy standards, it is instructive to revisit a work of literature which has done more than almost any other to promote reading amongst boys. Whether revisiting it or discovering it for the first time, adults will also be enchanted by Stevenson's consummate skills as a story-teller.

by Robert Louis Stevenson Stevenson conceived of the idea of Treasure Island (originally titled, "The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys") from a map of an imaginary, romantic island idly drawn by Stevenson and his stepson on a rainy day in Breamar, Scotland.
