The date is also given by Baring-Gould in "Nero Wolfe of West Thirty-Fifth Street," 1969, but again, no time.

This is the first of three Nero Wolfe books that involve crime syndicate leader Arnold Zeck and his widespread operations. Zeck – Wolfe's Moriarty – telephones Wolfe to warn him off an investigation that Zeck believes will interfere with his crime syndicate. Each time, Wolfe refuses to cooperate, and anticipates that there will be consequences. In this book, the publisher of a horse racing magazine dies of cyanide poisoning while appearing on a p...
Champagne for One

When Archie is asked, as a special favor, to stand in for a friend at a dinner party for unwed mothers, murder naturally follows. Nero Wolfe would of course prefer not to be involved, but the obvious suspect wants to hire the duo to find the killer before the police find him. If you're interested in mysteries at all, you have to read at least a few Nero Wolfe novels; Stout inspired so much of what came after him....
Fer-de-Lance

Wolfe manages to tie together the deaths of a college president and an Italian immigrant and performs one of his prodigious feats of questioning, one that is mentioned in many of the books in the series. There's a lot of snakes in Fer-de-Lance, including the fer-de-lance that gets delivered to Wolfe's door. This is the first Stout book, and so it's a little uneven in places, but still well worth reading for mystery fans....

David Langford s critical review of Rex Stout s Nero Wolfe books.
http://www.ansible.co.uk/writing/rexstout.html
A Stout Fellow
David Langford flips idly through some 1992 Nero Wolfe reissues.... The point is not so much whether Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe is one of the great detectives. It is that Wolfe and his narrator Archie Goodwin are a good bet for second place in the altogether more exclusive ranks of great detective double-acts (after the inevitable Holmes and Watson). The combination of ponderous, Johnsonian Wolfe with wisecracking Archie remains almost irresistible, almost all the time. Now that the Wolfe books are being reissued in Scribners hardback and Sphere paperback , it's worth a look back at the fat private eye's career. He had a long run despite his vast weight of one-seventh of a ton (the exact figure varies, but not as much as I thought before recalling that the American ton is only a mingy 2000 lb). It starts at the tail-end of Prohibition as Wolfe samples legal alternatives to his usual bootleg beer in the opening scene of Fer-de-Lance (1934), and finishes in the context of his aching wish to help unravel the tangles of Watergate and pin the big one on Nixon ( A Family Affair , 1975, the year of Rex Stout's death at age 89). I prefer to ignore the works by Other Hands which have caused him to shamble massively on beyond the grave, like Tor Johnson in

Three cases bring perplexing challenges to Nero Wolfe, as a man unsuccessfully attempts suicide just before he is killed, a murder victim's family hides the identity of the killer, and a horticulturist discovers his girlfriend's body. Reissue.
Customer Reviews
Enjoyable logic-puzzle style mysteries "Three Doors to Death" is a collection of three short mystery stories that were written in the late 1940s and set in New York. The mysteries were whodunit logic puzzles in style. Combined with the short story format, this meant that the characters didn't have much depth or complexity...though Wolfe and his clever assistant were engaging and a little more filled out.

The Author Rex Todhunter Stout Rex Todhunter Stout was born in Noblesville, Indiana, December 1, 1886. He was the sixth of nine children born to John and Lucetta Todhunter Stout. Educated in Kansas, he was recognized as a prodigy in arithmetic, and he studied at the University of Kansas. Stout quit school to enlist in the Navy where he spent two years as warrant officer on board President Theodore Roosevelt's yacht.
After the Navy, he began to write and tried his hand at a variety of jobs. With his brother, Stout devised and implemented a school banking system. Bank Day proved a very successful venture and allowed Stout to move to Paris and write full-time.
He published three novels before he turned to the mystery genre. The books received favorable reviews but were not best sellers. Stout returned to the United States and built a house on the Connecticut-New York state line. Fer-de-Lance , Stout's first Nero Wolfe novel, appeared in 1934.
