Her mother, suffering from Tuberculosis , died when she was eight, and when she was ten, her father deserted her and her siblings, leaving them at the Massachusetts State Infirmary in Tewksbury . We have 1 book for this author. Anne Sullivan in 1887 Anne Sullivan Annie Sullivan , or Johanna Mansfield Sullivan Macy , (April 14, 1866 – October 20, 1936) was a teacher best known as the tutor of Helen Keller.
Biography
Anne Sullivan was born in Feeding Hills, a subsection of the town of Agawam, Massachusetts. Her parents, Thomas Sullivan and Alice Clohessy, were poor Irish cooks who left Ireland in 1847 because of the Irish Potato Famine. Sullivan’s father taught her Irish tradition and folklore. Her mother, suffering from tuberculosis, died when she was nine, and when she was ten, Anne had to move in with a relative. Later her relatives sent her and her brother to the Tewksbury Almshouse. Sullivan spent all her time there with her younger brother Jimmie in hopes that they would never be separated; however, his condition resulting from a tubercular hip weakened him and he died a few months later. She taught Keller the names of things with the sign language alphabet signed into Keller's palm. In 1888, they went to the Perkins Institution together, then New York City's Wright-Humasen School, then the Cambridge School for Young Ladies, and finally to Radcliffe College. Keller graduated from Radcliffe in 1904 and after that, they moved together to Wrentham, Massachusetts, and lived on a benefactor's farm.

"Few singers can so effortlessly sail through such highs and lows in an intimate room and positively glow the way Annie Hughes can. Her voice is always in just the right place at the right time. Be it in Wisconsin, Baghdad or back in New York City, this light still shines brighter than all the rest. She's better than ever with a new resolve, a new freedom, and a new vulnerability that prove she is still a song's best friend."

excerpt:
One morning in early April, Annie had an idea. She hurried Helen over to a water pump. Annie pumped cold water over Helen's hands. As the water gushed out, Annie spelled "W-A-T-E-R" into Helen's hands. Helen Keller is a biography of a remarkable person who achieved worldwide fame for overcoming her handicap of deafness and blindness to become one of the most influential public figures of her time. Helen Keller was no ordinary child. She was a famous American author, activist, and lecturer. Helen was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In February, 1882, she became dramatically ill at the age of 19 months. The illness left Helen both blind and deaf. The next few years were very hard on her and her family. By the time, Helen was seven; her parents knew they needed help, and so they hired a tutor named Annie Sullivan.
