Sun Tzu (544 B.C. - 496 B.C.)
Sun Tzu was born around 544 B.C.E. Almost nothing is known about his life except that he was a Chinese military general who helped the King Ho-lu capture the city of Ying, bringing about the fall of the Ch'u state in 506 B.C.E. From this, Sun Tzu became known throughout the country as a wise and respected leader. Sun Tzu is best known today for a collection of essays called The Art of War , the oldest military treatise in the world. The text became known through translations by Father J. J. M. Amiot, a French Jesuit priest. The principles in the book are varied and include: "All warfare is based on deception," "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting," and "The art of war…is governed by five constant factors…(1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline)". The Art of War has had a deep and lasting impact on military thinking through the ages and is today making a name for itself in the business world.

About Sun Tzu
The Pronunciation
If you are talking to a western person about Sun Tzu the most common pronunciation is " Sun Sue " like the Sun in the sky plus a boy named Sue . This is nothing like the correct Chinese pronunciation which is " Sun Tzzz Sun rhymes with un in the German word "unter" or the Spanish-English word (Military) "junta" plus Tzzz like the last sound you make when you say "words".
The Legend
The legend goes that Sun Tzu was born into minor nobility in what is now Shandong, a part of China north of Shanghai that became famous for Confucius and the really tasty Shandong Chicken. Born "Sun Wu", he was given a good education and like Machiavelli, he wrote a military treatise in order to get noticed and hired by royalty. Unlike Machiavelli, it worked. Sun Wu expanded his 13 chapter Art of War into 82 chapters and trained the army. Eventually he broke the peace by invading the southern state of Yue. Other conflicts ensured but although his troops were once outnumbered 30,000 to 200,000 he was always victorious. Many successes followed and continued after his death. Some considered his death to be another of his deceptions. Finally though, the kingdom was defeated several years after his reported death. Just over 100 years later his descendant, Sun Bing, lead troops to victory again and wrote his own treatise. Sun Wu's name was changed to Sun Tzu on the

  • Chapter 1 : Estimates
War is a matter of vital importance to the state; a matter of life or death, the road either to survival or to ruin. Hence, it is imperative that it be studied thoroughly. These five fundamental factors are familiar to every general. Those who master them win; those who do not are defeated. Therefore, in laying plans, compare the following seven elements, appraising them with the utmost care.
  • Which ruler is wise and more able? Which commander is more talented? Which army obtains the advantages of nature and the terrain? In which army are regulations and instructions better carried out? Which troops are stronger? Which army has the better-trained officers and men? Which army administers rewards and punishments in a more enlightened and correct way?
  • By means of these seven elements, I shall be able to forecast which side will be victorious and which will be defeated. The general who heeds my counsel is sure to win. Such a general should be retained in command. One who ignores my counsel is certain to be defeated. Such a one should be dismissed.
