Creo que todos los partidos están de acuerdo en que este número prodigioso de niños en los brazos, sobre las espaldas o a los talones de sus madres, y frecuentemente de sus padres, resulta en el deplorable estado actual del Reino un perjuicio adicional muy grande; y por lo tanto, quienquiera que encontrase un método razonable, económico y fácil para hacer de ellos miembros cabales y útiles del estado, merecería tanto agradecimiento del público como para tener instalada su estatua como protector de la Nación. Adam Roberts hat sich mit bisher drei Romanen in die erste Garde der britischen Science Fiction geschrieben. Im bürgerlichen Beruf lehrt er Literatur an der Royal Holloway University in London. A LIEN C ONTACT bringt in loser Folge seine Analysen von Klassikern der SF. Den Anfang macht eine nicht nur für die Definition des Genres wichtige Frage: Ist Gullivers Reisen Science Fiction?
Kritiker sind sich praktisch einig darin, Gullivers Reisen einen Platz unter den Vorläufern des Genres zuzusprechen, als Proto-Science-Fiction mit tiefgreifendem Einfluss auf die eigentliche Science Fiction . Doch die meisten zögern, das Buch selbst der Science Fiction zuzuordnen. Für Brian Aldiss Amis denkt natürlich an ein ganz anderes Buch als das, welches Swift geschrieben hat. Aber sein Bedürfnis, die Wissenschaft gemäß den Vorstellungen der Pulp-SF aus der Mitte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts »einzubauen«, ist außerordentlich aufschlussreich. Es weist darauf hin, dass Swifts Phantasie die besondere Art materieller Detailliertheit fehlt, nach der moderne SF-Leser verlangen. Dem entspricht der Glaube, der den meisten Annäherungen an das Buch zugrunde liegt: die oberflächliche Erzählung der Ereignisse sei in gewisser Weise weniger wirklich als der satirische Subtext, in dem verschiedene Aspekte des politischen Lebens im frühen achtzehnten Jahrhundert lächerlich gemacht werden. Es stellt das Buch jedoch auf den Kopf, wenn man es nur um des Subtextes willen liest; Howard Erskine-Hill bemängelt den Umstand, dass »die außergewöhnliche Erzählung und der Phantasiereichtum« des Buchs »zu oft durch Kritiken an den Rand der Debatte gedrängt wurden, die sich hauptsächlich mit den satirischen Absichten und der abschließenden Wirkung beschäftigten« (Erskine-Hill, S. 1).
