Dem entspricht der Glaube, der den meisten Annäherungen an das Buch zugrunde liegt: die oberflächliche Erzählung der Ereignisse sei in gewisser Weise weniger wirklich als der satirische Subtext, in dem verschiedene Aspekte des politischen Lebens im frühen achtzehnten Jahrhundert lächerlich gemacht werden. Es stellt das Buch jedoch auf den Kopf, wenn man es nur um des Subtextes willen liest; Howard Erskine-Hill bemängelt den Umstand, dass »die außergewöhnliche Erzählung und der Phantasiereichtum« des Buchs »zu oft durch Kritiken an den Rand der Debatte gedrängt wurden, die sich hauptsächlich mit den satirischen Absichten und der abschließenden Wirkung beschäftigten« (Erskine-Hill, S. 1).
