Tao Yuanming (365 - 427), style name 元亮 Yuanliang, nicknamed 陶潛 Tao Qian, is "generally considered one of the two or three greates pre-Tang poets." He was from 潯陽柴桑 Chaisang in Xunyang, an area near Jiujiang, on the south bank of the Yangzi river in Jiangxi province. He once wrote the following famous couplet, called Poem on a Stringless Qin 但識琴中趣, If one just knows the inner significance of the qin
何勞絃上聲? Why make the effort to put on the strings and make sounds? This attitude has often been criticized. Comments about him in Qinshu Daquan include the following. Folio 16, #53 (Su Dongpo critices this couplet in his Collected Writings)
Folio 20B, #115

Tao Chien (Tao Yuan-ming), Poet of Reclusion
T ao Yuan-ming (365-427), also known as Tao Chien or Tao Quin, represents both the old and new in an era of China that saw years of war and chaos. Tao Chien is well educated in the classics of Confucianism and Taoism, and later in life he may have befriended a local Buddhist figure long before Buddhism was significant in China. But Tao Chien is chiefly remembered not for his breadth of knowledge but for his unique voice as a poet of transition and reclusion. Tao's career as a "scholar-gentleman" or government official, clashed with his propensity for solitude, and he became a recluse in the Chinese manner, in a rural area with his family. As a poet he projects warmth, humanity, and personal vulnerability. Unlike most of his contemporaries and predecessors, Tao Chien neither wrote in a lofty manner nor exaggerated the virtues of reclusion. He is at once loyal to friends and family, skeptical philosophically, a realist about daily life and its hardships, but also rueful and wistfully romantic in his struggle to be worthy of the hermits and sages of the past. Tao's autobiographical summary of several paragraphs, "Biography of the Gentleman of the Five Willows," written in the third person, is a stylized

Quote from crienglish.com
Tao Yunaming, also known as Tao Qian , lived in the 4th century during the East Jin period. His natural style helped define the ideal Chinese poem and though he lived a poor and simple life, he enjoyed it very much. His spirited, modest character was greatly admired by his contemporaries.
Tao Yunaming's great-grandfather, Tao Kan, held an official position and also made great contributions to the culture of East Jin. Tao Yunaming's father was an official as well, but died when his son was only eight years old. Soon afterward the family went through hard times. As a teenager, Tao Yuanming hoped to achieve success as an official, but there was much turbulence, corruption and conflict in East Jin at this time. Tao Yuanming retreated soon after getting his first official position at the age of 29. He would occasionally return to public life, but would always withdraw afterward.
Tao Yunaming became poorer as time went on. Eventually, he could not even feed his family. So, at the age of 41, he was forced return to work as an official. He condemned materialism and rank and 80 days later, resigned again and became a recluse.

As medieval Chinese manuscripts were copied and recopied through the centuries, both mistakes and deliberate editorial changes were introduced, thereby affecting readers' impressions of the author's intent. In Tao Yuanming and Manuscript Culture, Xiaofei Tian shows how readers not only experience authors but produce them by shaping texts to their interpretation. Tian examines the mechanics and history of textual transmission in China by focusing on the evolution over the centuries of the reclusive poet Tao Yuanming into a figure of epic stature.
Considered emblematic of the national character, Tao Yuanming (also known as Tao Qian, 365?-427 c.e.) is admired for having turned his back on active government service and city life to live a simple rural life of voluntary poverty. The artlessness of his poetic style is held as the highest literary and moral ideal, and literary critics have taken great pains to demonstrate perfect consistency between Tao Yuanming's life and poetry. Earlier work on Tao Yuanming has tended to accept this image, interpreting the poems to confirm the image.

Library Culture ABC Literature ... Writers and Works Tao Yuanming Tao Yuanming (365-427), a native of Caisang of Xunyang (today's southwest of Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province), was born in a family of a downfallen eunuch. He had served as an official for several years, and later abdicated his post. He led a reclusive life after rejecting the life of an official, and made rural life the major subject of his creation and was, thereby, called a pastoral poet. At a time when poems written in excessively ornate language and strictly imitated forms, yet empty of content, achieved dominance in poetry circles, Tao Yuanming carried on the tradition of Yuefu folksongs and formed his own simple and natural style, opening up a new vista for classical poetry. Moreover, he further refined the forms of the five-character poem. Many of Tao Yuanming's poems reflect his disgust of the negative of social reality and a strong love for the quiet and simple life in the countryside. In Back to Nature he compares officialdom to a net and life in official circles to that of a "caged bird" and a "pounded fish" and the recluse's life is likened to "breaking the birdcage" and "returning to nature."

Tag: Tao Yuanming (AD 365-427), also known as Tao Qian, is a famous landscape poet. He had been a minor official for several years during his youth. Weary of the corruption in government, he resigned his post and lived a recluse's life ever after. Many of his poems reflect his disgust of the negative of social reality and a strong love for the quiet and simple life in the countryside. In Back to Nature he compares officialdom to a net and life in official circles to that of a "caged bird" and a "ponded fish" and the recluse's life is likened to "breaking the birdcage" and "returning to nature." Engaging in farm work himself, his poems are full of the joy of labor For example, the third poem in Back to Nature lucidly reflects on the happiness drawn from work. Disappointment with the real world drove Tao Yuanming to construct an ideal world in his poems, as in his Peach Blossom Spring which evokes from his imagination the form of a utopian society. Apart from his landscape poems, Tao Yuanming's works, which cover various Subject matters, also include poems lauding warriors, poems full of love for the nation, and poems revealing his wish to hide from the world.
