Tarkington, [Newton] Booth
Tarkington, [Newton] Booth (1869-1946), novelist and playwright, spent his first two years of college at Purdue, his last two at Princeton. He was a founder of the Triangle Club, and editor of the Nassau Literary Magazine, a contributor of humorous drawings and literary wit to The Tiger, and the most popular man in his class. Bliss Perry said he was ``the only Princeton man who had ever been known to play poker (with his left hand), write a story for the Nassau Lit (with his right hand), and lead the singing in a crowded room, performing these three acts simultaneously.'' These pleasurable activities Tarkington carried on at some expense to his studies, and when his class graduated in 1893 he lacked sufficient credits for a degree. His later achievements, however, won him an honorary A.M. in 1899 and an honorary Litt.D. in 1918. Tarkington's singing of Kipling's ballad, ``The Hanging of Danny Deever'' was a highlight of student life in his time. Sooner or later, when the seniors gathered on the steps of Nassau Hall for their singing, the call would go up ``Tark! Tark! Danny Deever!'' and although he would always protest and suggest another song and sometimes even try to slink away his classmates would call for him until he had performed. In later years at class reunions the cry continued, and as one of his classmates related in the Alumni Weekly

The delay occasioned by his fruitless attempt on Marjorie and the altercation with his enemy at her gate had allowed other ladies ample time to prepare for callersand to receive them. Customer Reviews: penrod I thought that Penrod was a extremely funny story about a boy in the the early 1900's. It was a great story about a 12 year old boy named penrod along with his faithful companion duke and his friends Sam,Verman, and Herman. The gang was always clashing with adults and teacherS making it a humurous story about young boys getting into mischief. Its an amazing story that yound adults can relate to as well as adults in their past experiences in their school days. It almost feels as if ur part of the group and your right along with them starting trouble. From anything to skipping a pageant to dipping a girls hair in ink. Its an amazing story about teenagers living an average life in an urban city living and coping with everyday problems. Fond Memories

    Booth Tarkington 1869-1946
Booth Tarkington, wrote novels about life in the Middle West, beginning with The Gentleman from Indiana (1899) and including two Pulitzer Prize winners. Born in Indianapolis, Tarkington travelled throughout Europe and North America, and eventually built an estate, Seawood , in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he and his second wife, Susannah Robinson, lived from May through December each year, returning to Indianapolis for the balance. Their amenities in Kennebunkport included, besides the house, a schooner Regina and "The Floats," a boathouse to which Tarkington went afternoons for coffee and conversation. Kenneth Roberts was a close neighbor and friend. The boathouse is now the Kennebunkport Maritime Museum/Gallery. Tarkington had a middle-class upbringing in Indianapolis. He attended Purdue University and then Princeton University (class of 1893), graduating from neither. He was editor of the Nassau Literary Magazine at Princeton, which later awarded him both an honorary A.M. (1899) and an honorary Litt.D. (1918). In 1893, Tarkington returned to Indianapolis and tried to make a living from drawing and writing. A period of rejections followed his sale of a sketch with text to
