She was born Sara Trevor Teasdale in St. Louis, Missouri , and after her marriage in 1914 she went by the name "'Sara Teasdale Filsinger'" Teasdale had poor health for most of her life, and it was only at age 9 that she was well enough to begin school. In 1898 she began attending Mary Institute, but switched rapidly to Hosmer Hall in 1899, where she finished in 1903. Teasdale's first poem was published in Reedy's Mirror , a local newspaper, in 1907. Her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems , was published that same year. Teasdale's second collection of poems, Helen of Troy and Other Poems , was published in 1911. It was well received by critics, who praised its lyrical mastery and romantic subject matter. In the years 1911 to 1914, Teasdale courted a few men, including poet Vachel Lindsay , who was absolutely in love with her but did not feel that he could provide enough money or stability to keep her satisfied. She chose instead to marry Ernst Filsinger , who had been a fan of her poetry for a number of years, on 19 December 1914.

The fountain shivers lightly in the rain, The laurels drip, the fading roses fall, The marble satyr plays a mournful strain That leaves the rainy fragrance musical. Oh dripping laurel, Phoebus sacred tree, Would that swift Daphne's lot might come to me, Then would I still my soul and for an hour Change to a laurel in the glancing shower. Night Song at Amalfi I asked the heaven of stars
What I should give my love—
It answered me with silence,
Silence above.
I asked the darkened sea
Down where the fishers go—
It answered me with silence,
Silence below.
Oh I could give him weeping,
Or I could give him song— But how can I give him silence My whole life long ? To a Child Watching the Gulls (Queenstown Harbor) The painted light was on their underwings, And on their firm curved breasts the painted light, Sailing they swerved in the rd air of sunset With petulant cries unworthy of their flight; But on their underwings that fleeting splendor

Ellen Jim We are two part-time academics. Ellen teaches in the English department and Jim in the IT program at George Mason University.
Dear Anne, Here am I for the first time in a long time. I’m thinking maybe the way I can write here more regularly is regularly to send along some of the postings I’ve been sending each Friday to Wompo (a woman poets list) as "Foremother Poet" postings.
About age 20 Collected Poems of Sara Teasdale Teasdale is today perhaps best known for her "Love Songs," "Helen of Troy and other poems," and "Sonnets to Duse" (she became infatuated and admired the actress so), and her poetry in this vein may be likened to Christina Rossetti’s; Teasdale uses the devices of repetition we’ve been talking about; here’s a famous one: I shall not care When I am dead and over me bright April
Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
I shall not care. I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful
When rains bends down the bough
