The Einar Hansen Library: book bindings
Example 9 Tegnér, Esaias , Frithiofs saga. Ill. by Kurt Jungstedt. Stockholm: Nordiska Bibliofilsällskapet, 1937. 4:o. Light sand colored leather binding with blind stamped ornamentation of horizontal bands in zigzag pattern and title on the spine printed in green. Green patterned end-paper. Several forward thrusts of creative renewal of Swedish book design belong to the 1930's: the founding of Svensk Bokkonst and the Stockholms Typografiska Gille, the work of Anders Billow and Hugo Steiner-Prag. In this Tegnér edition (Example 9) the "new typography" has inspired the composition of the text with the linear Gill Sans. The band pattern is related to contemporary French geometric bands (Cretté, Legrain). The typography och composition of the bands was executed by Sven Ivar Lind, and the P.A. Norstedt & Söners Bokbinderi was responsible for the bindery work. But during the latter part of the 20th century Swedish publisher's bindings with aesthetic qualities decreased. teacher, bishop, and most popular poet of his period. Originally associated with the Romantic movement, he rejected its emotional and mystic aspects. His ideal of poetry became increasingly more Classical but assimilated certain Romantic ingredients. His greatest poetic achievements were the much-translated Frithiofs saga (1825), a cycle based on an Old Icelandic saga, and two narrative poems, the sensitive religious idyll Children of the Lord's Supper (1820; translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) and Axel Related Propaedia Topics: Nineteenth-century literature Poetry
