Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (September 2009) Robert Tressell banner Robert Tressell (17 April 1870 – 3 February 1911) was the nom-de-plume of Robert Croker, latterly Robert Noonan, an Irish writer best known for his novel The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists Contents Early life Adult life South Africa England ... edit Early life Robert Tressell was born in Dublin , in Ireland (at the time, part of the United Kingdom ). He was the illegitimate son of Samuel Croker, a senior member of the Royal Irish Constabulary . He was christened Robert Croker in the Roman Catholic Church . His father, who was not Catholic, had his own family, but attempted to provide for Robert financially before his death in 1875. Tressell had, in the words of his daughter, Kathleen, "a very good education" and could speak a variety of languages. However, when he was sixteen, he showed signs of a radical political consciousness, and left his family, declaring he "would not live on the family income derived largely from absentee landlordism It was at this time he began using the surname "Noonan", his mother's maiden name, to distance himself from his father.

Edwardian Hastings Robert Tressell Photograph of Robert Noonan sitting on a gate at Old Roar Hastings c.1908 Tressell was the pen name of Robert Noonan who was born in Dublin in 1870. He was brought up in Ireland and England but left to make a new life in South Africa where his daughter, Kathleen was born in 1892. In 1901 at the outbreak of the Boer War Noonan returned to England and settled with his widowed sister, Adelaide in Hastings. Another sister, Mary Jane was already living in St. Leonards where she ran a school. Museum Accession No: HASMG 989.34.71 Detailed View In August 1910 Noonan left Hastings for Liverpool leaving the manuscript of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in the care of his daughter, Kathleen. He had intended to set sail for Canada but was admitted to hospital with advanced tuberculosis and died on February 3rd 1911. The first, edited, version of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was published by Grant Richards in 1914.

There are many buildings and landmarks in Hastings that relate to the life of Tressell, often called the Tressell trail, the buildings include the Town Hall, Burton and Co Decorators, Furnishers and Undertakers - 88 Stonefield Road, 199a Queens Road, 241 London Road as well as 1 Plynlimmon Road where he lived for a brief period. The satirical novel comments on the position of the working classes and capitalism in the workplace. The book is set in a town called Mugsborough, which is recognisable as Hastings under a thin disguise.
