Sojourner Truth: Abolitionist, Minister, Ex-Slave, Woman's Rights Activist By Jone Johnson Lewis , About.com Guide
    See More About:
Sojourner Truth Courtesy Library of Congress zSB(3,3) Dates: November 26 The woman we know as Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in New York as Isabella Baumfree (after her father's owner, Baumfree). She was sold several times, and while owned by the John Dumont family in Ulster County, married Thomas, another of Dumont's slaves. She had five children with Thomas. In 1827, New York law emancipated all slaves, but Isabella had already left her husband and run away with her youngest child. She went to work for the family of Isaac Van Wagenen. While working for the Van Wagenen's whose name she used briefly she discovered that a member of the Dumont family had sold one of her children to slavery in Alabama. Since this son had been emancipated under New York Law, Isabella sued in court and won his return.

    Truth, Sojourner (Speech)
Posted by: gretchen on May 16, 2006 in Inspiration Truth argued that while American antebellum culture often placed white women upon a pedestal and gave them certain privileges (most notably that of not working), this attitude was not extended to black women. The speech was delivered in response to comments made by a male speaker, apparently in the audience.
    First-hand account and commentary
The speech was recorded by Frances Gage, feminist activist and one of the authors of the huge compendium of materials of the first wave, The History of Woman Suffrage. Gage, who was presiding at the meeting, describes the event: The tumult subsided at once, and every eye was fixed on this almost Amazon form, which stood nearly six feet high, head erect, and eyes piercing the upper air like one in a dream. At her first word there was a profound hush. She spoke in deep tones, which, though not loud, reached every ear in the house, and away through the throng at the doors and windows. She was the daughter of James and Betsey, slaves of one Colonel Ardinburgh, Hurley, Ulster County, New York. Colonel Ardinburgh belonged to that class of people called Low Dutch. Of her first master, she can give no account, as she must have been a mere infant when he died; and she, with her parents and some ten or twelve other fellow human chattels, became the legal property of his son, Charles Ardinburgh. She distinctly remembers hearing her father and mother say, that their lot was a fortunate one, as Master Charles was the best of the family,-being, comparatively speaking, a kind master to his slaves. James and Betsey having, by their faithfulness, docility, and respectful behavior, won his particular regard, received from him particular favors-among which was a lot of land, lying back on the slope of a mountain, where, by improving the pleasant evenings and Sundays, they managed to raise a little tobacco, corn, or flax; which they exchanged for extras, in the articles of food or clothing for themselves and children. She has no remembrance that Saturday afternoon was ever added to their own time, as it is by some masters in the Southern States... more THE NARRATIVE OF SOJOURNER TRUTH:

    Sojourner Truth
    "Ain't I a woman?"
Sojourner Truth was born a New York slave in 1797 on the plantation of Colonel Hardenbergh. Her real name was Isabelle VanWagener (some references use the name Isabelle Baumfree). She was freed by a new New York law which proclaimed that all slaves twenty-eight years of age and over were to be freed. Isabelle, in her later life, thought she received messages from God. That was how she got her new name, Sojourner Truth. She joined the Anti-Slavery Society and became an abolitionist lecturer and a speaker for women's rights both black and white. One speech for which she became well known for, was called "Ain't I a Woman?". Olive Gilbert, a close friend of Sojourner Truth, wrote a biography of her life, "A Narrative of Sojourner Truth: a Northern Slave". The biography helped her earn money for her trips. She also sold postcards with her picture and her motto below which said, "We Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance". After the Civil War, she gave speeches for equal rights. On November 26, 1883 Sojourner Truth died. Sojourner Truth was different from what was considered to be normal at that time and place. Her determination to help her people was fearless and confident. Truth never gave up when she was being over looked during her speeches. She would always discover some way to get attention from the audience. Truth took many risks to achieve her goal of releasing the blacks. For example she was threatened to be murdered by a few Southerners for many different reasons but Truth stood tall and firm. Although some people said she would never approach her goal of freeing her people, she did. To many people Sojourner Truth was a great leader. Many lives including the Northerners', Southerners', and blacks', and whites', were changed because of her influence. Her daring personality, strong will, and courage helped her make a great and lasting difference in the United States of America.
