SUMMARY After the Revolutionary War, American sailors lost the protection of Britain's Royal Navy and were easy prey for the pirates of the North African coast, who captured ships and cargo, enslaved crew, and demanded ransom from the U.S. Motivated by these events, Royall Tyler, the first American-born playwright, poet, and novelist, wrote "The Algerine Captive." Originally published anonymously in 1797, it tells the tale of fictitious Boston native Dr. Updike Underhill, his capture by Barbary pirates, and their efforts to convert him to their Muslim faith. Written in an entertaining and satiric style that predated Mark Twain, Tyler's novel reveals his patriotic pride and anti-slavery beliefs. His comments on the religious and cultural divide between Western and Islamic beliefs of the day still resonate today.

Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies Royall Tyler (1757-1826), American playwright and novelist as well as a jurist, wrote the first successful American play. Royall Tyler was born into a prosperous and enterprising Boston family. His intellectual qualities were early recognized, for when he graduated from Harvard in 1776 he was awarded a bachelor's degree from Yale as well. He interrupted his legal studies to serve as a major during the Revolution, was admitted to the bar in 1780, and joined the law office of John Adams. Tyler fell in love with the future president's daughter; but the engagement was broken off, reportedly because Adams disapproved of Tyler's high-spirited temperament . Tyler once more joined the Army during Shays' Rebellion (1786), and his eloquent speeches contributed to calming the rioters. While on military business in New York in 1787, Tyler attended the theater and, after seeing a production of The School for Scandal

INTRODUCTION.
THE 'Contrast' was the first American play ever performed in public by a company of professional actors. Several plays by native authors had been previously published, the more noteworthy being the 'Prince of Parthia,' a tragedy by Thomas Godfrey of Philadelphia, which was probably written, and was offered to Hallam's company in 1759 (but not pro- duced), and was printed in 1765, two years after the author's death.
The character of Jonathan is a thoroughly original conception; nothing of the typical Yankee, since so familiar and popular, had as yet appeared, either on the stage or in print.
The 'Contrast' was first performed at the John Street Theater, New-York City, on the 16th of April, 1787, and undoubtedly met with the approval of the public, as it was repeated on the 18th of April, the 2d and 12th of May the same season, and was reproduced with success later at Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston. It was, as far as can be learned, the first lit- erary effort of its author, a most remarkable genius, and one of the pioneers in several branches of our lit- erature, who, up to within a few weeks of its produc- tion, had never attended a theatrical performance.
Tyler was apparently immediately attracted to the theater, for he became a constant visitor before and behind the curtain, and rapidly gained the friendship of all the performers, particularly that of Wignell, the low comedian of the company. He gave Wignell the manuscript of the 'Contrast,' and on the 19th of May

He graduated from Harvard College in 1776 and received a degree from Yale the same year. He studied law with John Adams and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1780. He took up the practice of law in Portland, Maine, and later in Quincy, Massachusetts. Tyler served in the militia in 1778 and in 1787 became an aide to General Benjamin Lincoln during Shays' Rebellion. It was during this military campaign that Tyler became acquainted with Vermont where he would eventually settle. Tyler established a law practice in Guilford, Vermont, in 1791 and served as state's attorney for Windham County, Vermont, 1794-1801; justice on the Vermont Supreme Court, 1801-1807; and Chief Justice of the state's highest court from 1807 to 1813. He taught law at the University of Vermont from 1811 to 1814. Tyler's literary fame lies in his work as an early American playwright, and author of the first performed American comedy
