Irish physicist who championed the now-accepted notion that there is no fundamental difference between animate and inanimate matter, and that the origin of life was chemical: [T]he matter of the animal body is that of inorganic nature. There is no substance in the animal tissues which is not primarily derived from the rocks, the water and the air... a perfect reversal of this process of reduction would carry us from the inorganic to the organic, and such a reversal is at least conceivable. Carrying on from where Spallanzini de la Tour , and Pasteur had left off, Tyndall also finally disposed of the old idea of spontaneous generation by answering the last objection raised by supporters of that view. It had been observed that microbes sometimes began growing in infusions, such as those of hay, even after the latter had been boiled. Tyndall showed that the reason for this was that the hay contained spores which can survive even after long exposure to high temperature.

Natural philosopher. CONTEXT Administrative/Biographical history Philosophical Magazine Saturday Review from 1859, and became Scientific Adviser to The Reader 1863-1867. In 1869 he inaugurated the journal Nature and pushed for public knowledge and access to science. In 1866-1867, he was on the British Association Committee for teaching science. He published many papers through the Royal Society, as well as books such as Glaciers of the Alps in 1860 and Heat Considered as a Mode of Motion in 1863. He received the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society, in1869. In 1874, he gave a presidential address to the British Association in Belfast which caused a great deal of controversy since he questioned theistic explanations for natural phenomena. In 1876, he married Louisa Charlotte Hamilton. During the 1870s and 1880s, Tyndall was often ill. He resigned from his position as Scientific Advisor to Trinity House and the Board of Trade in 1884, over Joseph Chamberlain's policy for lighthouses. He rejected Gladstone's policies for home rule in Ireland in 1885, and by 1886 he became so ill that he was eventually bedridden. He retired from the RI in 1887, and after an accidental overdose of medication by his wife, Louisa, he died in 1893.

Down Bromley Kent Feb. 4 th Dear Tyndall I am very I can fancy a man so ignorant of nat. History as to advise Owen to compare a skull with a vertebra; on exactly same principle, I hope that you will squeeze together pieces of ice quite dry as far as water is concerned, but wetted with something which will not freeze. There is a valuable suggestion for you!! It is beautiful your having given cleavage to ice.

SUMMARY John Tyndall (1820-1893) is one of Ireland's greatest scientists and educators. Amongst his many achievements, he is best known for the explanation of why the sky is blue - the scattering of light by small particles suspended in the atmosphere. This colour is described as Tyndall Blue. He was also a gifted public lecturer, an avid promoter of the public understanding of science, and a famous mountaineer. Beside that Tyndall was one of the first scientists to recognise the earth's natural greenhouse effect and to identify the relative radiative forcing values of the different greenhouse gases. In 1853 he was appointed Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution in London and began to work beside Michael Faraday. He succeeded Faraday as Superintendent in 1862.

    Tyndall, John
(b . Aug. 2, 1820, Leighlin Bridge, County Carlow, Ire.d. Dec. 4, 1893, Hindhead, Surrey, Eng.), British physicist who demonstrated why the sky is blue. In 1853 Tyndall was chosen professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution, London, where he became a colleague and friend of Michael Faraday. His early work was concerned with the magnetic properties of crystals, but in 1859 he began investigating the ability of various gases to absorb and radiate heat. He established that humid air absorbs heat with little change in temperature, a phenomenon of meteorological importance. Tyndall studied the diffusion of light by large molecules and dust, known as the Tyndall effect; he also performed experiments demonstrating that the sky's blue colour results from the scattering of the Sun's rays by molecules in the atmosphere, a phenomenon which was later explained theoretically by Lord Rayleigh. In 1881 he delivered the final blow to the long-held idea of spontaneous generation by proving that germ-free air does not lead to food decay. Tyndall's publications, more than 16 books and 145 papers, include
