Your Home
Your home uses energy every day, all day long. It uses energy to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It uses energy to provide you with light when you need it. It uses energy to provide you with hot water. And it uses energy to run all of your appliances and home electronics. Here you can learn how to use the energy in your home more efficiently. You can also learn how to use renewable energy to provide your home with electricity, heating, cooling, and water heating.
Apartments
Save energy in your apartment and reduce your utility bills.
Appliances and Electronics

Residential Compliance Using RES check
The RES check materials have been developed to simplify and clarify code compliance with the Model Energy Code (MEC), the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and a number of state codes. The RES check residential compliance materials offer two ways to demonstrate compliance: the trade-off approach and the prescriptive packages approach.
Trade-off Approach
The RES check software simplifies energy code compliance by automating the trade-off calculations for this approach. RES check includes the following state-specific energy codes: Arkansas, Georgia, New York, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Pima County, Arizona. The RES check-Web online code compliance tool can also be used to show compliance using the trade-off approach. It performs just like the desktop version but requires no download or installation. RES check-Web can be used in states that require the MEC/IECC as their energy code for residential buildings.
Prescriptive Approach
The RES check Package Generator is a web-based application that allows you to generate your own code-compliant insulation and window packages rather than following pre-defined prescriptive packages.

Weatherization Assistance Program
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) enables low-income families to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. Funds are used to improve the energy performance of dwellings of needy families using the most advanced technologies and testing protocols available in the housing industry. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) provides funding to states, U.S. overseas territories, and Indian tribal governments, which manage the day-to-day details of the program. These governments, in turn, fund a network of local community action agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local governments that provide these weatherization services in every state, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and among Native American tribes. The energy conservation resulting from these efforts of state and local agencies helps our country reduce its dependence on foreign oil and decrease the cost of energy for families in need while improving the health and safety of their homes. During the past 33 years, WAP has provided weatherization services to more than 6.4 million low-income households. Families receiving weatherization services see their annual energy bills reduced by an average of about $437, depending on fuel prices. Because the energy improvements that make up weatherization services are long lived, the savings add up over time to substantial benefits for weatherization clients and their communities, and the nation as a whole.

About SULI This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities (see Choosing a Lab The summer programs at the various laboratories will run from late May to mid-August, fall programs run from August through December and spring programs from January through May. The exact start date will depend on the laboratory and will be given to participants who have been accepted at that specific laboratory. Students are required to participate for the full term of the program.

What is Expected of Each Participant
Every participant is required to:
  • Complete the full ten or sixteen week program
  • Complete entrance and exit surveys on the EDULINK web-site
  • Behave in a responsible and professional manner
  • Submit a complete copy of a Research Paper or Power Point presentation (depending on the individual laboratory's policy)
