Geothermal energy taps the heat that lies beneath the earth's surface in several ways. We use the geothermal reservoirs of hot water and steam to generate electricity and for direct applications, including aquaculture, crop drying, and district heating. We also use the constant temperature that exists at very shallow depths for heating and cooling buildings with the energy-efficiency technology of ground-source heat pumps. Learn more about geothermal energy. NREL works in partnership with industry, academia, and other research laboratories to research, develop, and demonstrate technologies to advance the use of geothermal energy as a clean, renewable, domestic power source for the United States. The U.S. Department of Energy's Building Energy Codes Program is an information resource on national model energy codes. We work with other government agencies, state and local jurisdictions, national code organizations, and industry to promote stronger building energy codes and help states adopt, implement, and enforce those codes. The Program recognizes that energy codes maximize energy efficiency only when they are fully embraced by users and supported through education, implementation, and enforcement.

Office of Policy and International Affairs
The Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Affairs (PI) is the primary policy advisor to the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Under Secretary on domestic and international policy development and implementation as well as DOE policy analysis and activities. The Office of Policy and International Affairs' role is to deliver unbiased advice to the Department of Energy's leadership on existing and prospective energy-related policies, based on integrated and well-founded data and analysis. The Office of Policy and International Affairs has primary responsibility for the Department of Energy's international energy activities including international emergency management, national security, and international cooperation in science and technology.
U.S.-China Electric Vehicle and Battery Technology Workshop
In late August, DOE's Office of Policy and International Affairs and China's Ministry of Science and Technology convened a 3-day workshop at Argonne National Laboratory that brought together more than 100 U.S. and Chinese experts from government, industry, and academia to discuss progress made in the electric vehicle industry to date and opportunities for increased collaboration. The workshop was held in support of the U.S.-China Electric Vehicles Initiative announced by President Obama and China's President Hu Jintao in 2009. Participants engaged in three concurrent roundtables on battery technology roadmapping, battery test procedures, and vehicle demonstrations and infrastructure.

80-Meter Wind Maps and Wind Resource Potential
Wind Powering America provides high-resolution wind maps and estimates of the wind resource potential that would be possible from development of the available windy land areas after excluding areas unlikely to be developed. Here you will find an 80-meter wind resource map for the contiguous United States with links to state wind maps and a chart showing the wind resource potential for the contiguous United States. Also find links to the Webinar and news release . Some of the following documents are available as Adobe Acrobat PDFs. Download Adobe Reader
80-Meter Wind Resource Maps
Click on a state to view the wind map for that state. Alaska Hawaii Puerto Rico , and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not have 80-meter wind maps available but have 50-meter wind maps.
  • Zoom or print the full U.S. map ( PDF 4.2 MB Click on a state to view the wind map for that state.
The U.S. map shows the predicted mean annual wind speeds at 80-m height (at a spatial resolution of 2.5 km that is interpolated to a finer scale). Areas with annual average wind speeds around 6.5 m/s and greater at 80-m height are generally considered to have suitable wind resource for wind development. NREL has conducted a preliminary review and validation of the AWS Truewind's 80-m map estimates for 19 selected states (6 Western states, 6 Midwestern states, and 7 Eastern states) based on tower measurements at heights of about 50 m and above from more than 300 locations.

Smart Grid
The electric grid delivers electricity from points of generation to consumers, and the electricity delivery network functions via two primary systems: the transmission system and the distribution system. The transmission system delivers electricity from power plants to distribution substations, while the distribution system delivers electricity from distribution substations to consumers. The grid also encompasses myriads of local area networks that use distributed energy resources to serve local loads and/or to meet specific application requirements for remote power, village or district power, premium power, and critical loads protection. The Smart Grid: An Introduction ” is a publication sponsored by DOE’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability that explores - in layman’s terms – the nature, challenges, opportunities and necessity of Smart Grid implementation.  Additional books, released in 2009, target the interests of specific stakeholder groups: Consumer Advocates Utilities Technology Providers Regulators ... Policy Makers and Environmental Groups , to explain in greater detail what the Smart Grid will mean to each us.

Hydrogen
Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier (like electricity) made from diverse domestic resources such as renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geothermal), nuclear energy, and fossil energy (combined with carbon capture/sequestration). Hydrogen in the long-term will simultaneously reduce dependence on foreign oil and emissions of greenhouse gases and criteria pollutants. In his 2003 State of the Union Address, President Bush announced the Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, a $1.2 billion commitment over 5 years to accelerate hydrogen related research to overcome obstacles in taking hydrogen fuel cell vehicles from the laboratory to the showroom. Fuel cell vehicles operating on hydrogen are zero-emission vehicles. The Energy Hydrogen Program is making progress towards the goal of a 2015 commercialization decision on hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles and the infrastructure to fuel them through an aggressive research program that accelerates the timeline for resolving technical and economic barriers. Energy's Hydrogen Posture Plan , outlines the activities, milestones, and deliverables Energy plans to pursue to support America's shift to a hydrogen-based transportation energy system.  A positive decision will yield the beginning of mass market penetration in 2020.  As transportation accounts for over two-thirds of the oil consumed daily, the Department of Energy's Hydrogen Program is primarily focused on developing hydrogen technology for the transportation sector.   The best near-term technology solution to reducing oil consumption and emissions is by making energy-efficient choices such as purchasing gasoline hybrid electric vehicles.

The Genomic Science Program (formerly Genomes to Life) uses microbial and plant genomic data, high-throughput analytical technologies, and modeling and simulation to develop a predictive understanding of biological systems behavior relevant to solving energy and environmental challenges including bioenergy production, environmental remediation, and climate stabilization. Human Genome Project Information This is the archive site of the U.S. Department of Energy's Human Genome Project. Completed in 2003, the Human Genome Project (HGP) was a 13-year project coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health to sequence the 3 billion basepairs that make up human DNA. Microbial Genome Program Archive This is the archive site of the U.S. Department of Energy's Microbial Genome Program. The MGP was begun in 1994 as a spinoff from the Human Genome Program. The program sequenced the genomes of a number of nonpathogenic microbes useful in solving DOE's mission challenges in environmental-waste cleanup, energy production, carbon cycling, and biotechnology.
