    No more Hiroshima earrings

Fat Man, left, and Little Boy stirred Japanese emotions
An American museum has stopped selling earrings in the shape of the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The director of the National Atomic Museum in New Mexico said the decision had been made because of sensitivity around the current anniversaries of the attacks. Anti-nuclear activists in Japan were outraged when they saw the miniature replicas advertised on the museum's Internet site. The museum said the earrings sold out on Friday and it had no plans to restock them. Ceremonies were held in Hiroshima on Friday to mark the 54th anniversary of the attack, which killed some 140,000 people out of an estimated population of 350,000. A larger bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later effectively sealed Japanese surrender and ended World War II. Internet sales The US National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque had sold the "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" earrings, named after the bombs dropped on the two cities, at $20 for a pair of one of each. Thousands of people marked the anniversary In the "Museum Exclusives" section of its Website, it boasted: "Where else will you find a pair of Fat Man and Little Boy earrings?"

      Hiroshima survivors slate bomb earrings
August 6 1999 at 07:51am Tokyo - Survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima said they will make a formal complaint to a US museum on Friday for selling earrings shaped like the bomb. Friday is the 54th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. The US National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, sells the Little Boy and Fat Man earrings, named after the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on its Internet page. In a section called Museum Exclusives, it sells the earrings at $20,00 for a pair of one of each bomb. "It's blasphemy. It just debases the feelings of those who suffered from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings," Kazuya Yasuda, an official at the Japan Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, said. Yasuda said the group will issue a formal protest on Friday at its annual convention in Hiroshima.

    The First Atomic Test
On Monday morning July 16, 1945, the world was changed forever when the first atomic bomb was tested in an isolated area of the New Mexico desert. Conducted in the final month of World War II by the top-secret Manhattan Engineering District, this test was code named Trinity. The Trinity test took place on the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range, about 230 miles south of the Manhattan Project's headquarters at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Today this 3,200 square mile range, partly located in the desolate Jornada del Muerto Valley, is named the White Sands Missile Range and is actively used for non-nuclear weapons testing. Before the war the range had been public and private grazing land that had always been thinly populated. During the war it was even more lonely and deserted because the ranchers had vacated their homes in January 1942. They left because the land had been withdrawn by the War Department for use as an artillery and bombing practice area shortly after the December 7, 1941, Japaneses attack on Pearl Harbor. In September 1944, a remote 18 by 24 square mile portion of the northeast corner of the Bombing Range was selected for the Trinity test by the military. The selection of this remote location in the Jornada del Muerto (Journey of Death) Valley for the Trinity test was from an initial list of eight possible test sites. Besides the Jornada, three of the other seven sites were also located in New Mexico: the Tularosa Basin near Alamogordo, the lava beds (now the El Malpais National Monument) south of Grants, and an area southwest of Cuba and north of Thoreau. Other possible sites not located in New Mexico were: an Army training area north of Blythe, California, in the Mojave Desert; San Nicolas Island (one of the Channel Islands) off the coast of Southern California; and on Padre Island south of Corpus Christi, Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico. The last choice was in the beautiful San Luis Valley of south central Colorado, new today's Great Sand Dunes National Monument.

Teacher's corner There are many resources available on the internet to assist teachers at all grade levels in preparing lessons, assignments, field trips, etc. about nuclear and radiation related topics. The links on this page point to some helpful sources. Note that in order to prepare a balanced lesson, you need to consider the source of the information. Anti-nuclear sources will play down or ignore the benefits of nuclear technology while amplifiying its drawbacks and risks. (Many make no distinction between nuclear weapons and nuclear energy). Pro-nuclear sources will concentrate on the benefits. Some government and academic sites will try to be more balanced. To get a truly balanced picture, try to get material from a variety of sites. Other good sources of classroom material include your local nuclear power plant (most have extensive public outreach programs, visitor centers, tours, etc.), or
