The first great sci-fi author
Written: May 06 '00
Product Rating: Pros: A visionary, predicting many of the modern advances.
Cons: His books are about 100 years old.
NetDanzr's Full Review: Verne, Jules Imagine and author who creates his own world, full of scientific wonders, strange characters and heroic deeds. Imagine a work of over 80 books, which all belong, in one way or another, into that reality. Imagine the brain, which put all this together. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mr. Jules Verne.
It's hard to describe Verne's work. He was certainly not the first science fiction writer. Eh, sorry, I didn't want to call his work science fiction. He did not write sci-fi for the sake of it. He was using fictional (at that time) scientific progress, to color his stories of adventure, heroic deeds, great villains and a strange world.

Short story writers France Portal Literature Portal Jules Gabriel Verne (February 8 1828–March 24 1905) was a French author and a pioneer of the science-fiction genre, best known for novels such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea Journey To The Center Of The Earth (1864), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne was noted for writing about space, air , and underwater travel before air travel and submarines were actually invented, and before practical means of space travel had been devised. He is one of the most translated authors in the world. Verne, along with Hugo Gernsback and H.G. Wells , is often popularly referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction." Like his confrères, Verne was a visionary not only in his ability to predict technological advances but in his ability to imagine a more

The Classic Literature Library presents
The Works of Jules Verne
Verne, Jules (1828-1905), French author, who is often regarded as the father of science fiction. He was born in Nantes, France, and ran away to sea at the age of 11. After he was sent home in disgrace, he vowed to travel only in his imagination. He carried out this pledge in more than 50 works that combine scientific fantasy and exciting adventure. Verne studied law in Paris, and from 1848 until 1863 wrote opera librettos and plays. His interest in science and geographical discovery led him to write on the possibility of exploring Africa in a balloon. Many publishers rejected this work, until... Jules Verne
Jules Verne was a French author of the late 19th century who is regarded as the father of science fiction. He was born in 1828 in Nantes and studied law in Paris, where, to the displeasure of his father, he developed a passion for theater. His first play was published in 1850, but he was not very successful until the publication of his story “Five Weeks in a Balloon” in 1869. Verne spent a long time in Paris libraries researching everything from astronomy to engineering as a foundation for his fantastic adventure stories. Because of the 19th century interest in science and invention, his novels, such as JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, became extremely popular. During his life, they brought Verne wealth and allowed him to buy a yacht and sail around Europe. They also began the science fiction tradition by predicting 20th century advances such as space flight and submarines, and are still widely read today.
