Virgil came to be regarded as one of Rome's greatest poets. His Aeneid can be considered a national epic of Rome and has been extremely popular from its publication to the present day. His work has influenced Western literature. His epic, the Aeneid , had followed the literary model of Homer 's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey . The story is about Aeneas's search for a new homeland and his war to found a city. This type of character is similar to Western heroes in the books of Owen Wister and Louis L'Amour Virgil's father was a wealthy landowner, who could afford a good education for his son that included schools in

Chirokids "As the twig is bent so the tree inclines" (Virgil 70-19 BC) At Skelian Chiropractic Clinic we understand how important it is to maintain a healthy spine throughout your lifetime, beginning at early infancy. Many spinal conditions can be identified and corrected in childhood avoiding difficulties in later life. Gentle techniques Babies and children respond well to gentle chiropractic and cranial techniques. To treat a little one, we use the same amount of force as you would use to check whether fruit was ripe. Babies Birth and early infancy can sometimes be a very difficult and traumatic time for both mother and baby. Constraint within the womb or a difficult delivery can cause stress to the delicate bones of the baby's head and neck causing an irritable baby. Children As a child grows up, and starts to walk, climb and run, the inevitable falls and bumps can affect the still-developing bones of the spine and scull. Once at school, the child carries heavy bags, sits on badly-designed chairs and takes part in a variety of sports which may lead to stress and injury.

VIRGIL V IRGIL , the greatest of the Roman poets, was born at Andes, a village near Mantua, in the first consulate of Pompeius and Crassus, 70 B.C. He was about thirty years younger than Julius Caesar and Lucretius; a little older than Augustus, Maecenas, and Horace. It is thought that his name was written VERGILIUS No life recorded offers a more complete dedication to one great purpose, or a more serene and unbroken concentration of powers on the poetic office. The poet was tall, dark, and somewhat rustic in air; modest, shy, retiring in disposition, and somewhat proud; a confirmed invalid, and never married. His life and his verse were pure and refined, full of a deep religious melancholy; he lived apart from all the storms and distractions around him, both public and private. Candor, fides, pietasi.e.

Greek and Roman classics in 17th and 18th century editions: an exhibition
Virgil (70-19 BC)
Virgil was one of the greatest Roman poets. Flourishing at a time when the Romans were striving to produce a literature that would match the Greek, Virgil sought to imitate the ancient Greek genres. This is best exemplified in the Georgics and the Aeneid where he took for his models the didactic poems of Hesiod and the epics of Homer respectively. In 17th and 18th century England the Aeneid was widely regarded as the greatest of the classical epic poems. It was thought that Virgil's grasp of human knowledge had created a work of exceptional depth, celebrating the Roman Empire and its values as well as the merits of royalism and one-man rule. Believing that Aeneas embodied the rule of the Emperor Augustus, parallels were drawn between Augustus and British Monarchy. This led to a great interest not only in the Aeneid , but also Virgil's other works and the production of many new editions and translations.

Italy After they set sail, the south wind again blew softly, carrying them on to the place they sought. As they went, they passed by the island where Circe lived. She used to sit all day and weave on her loom. As she sat, she sang with a very sweet voice. If any traveler went in to see who it was that sang so sweetly, she would give him a cup of wine. But this wine was poisoned, and when the man had drunk it, Circe would wave a wand over his head, and he became a beast: a lion, a bear, a wolf, or a pig. The Trojans, as they sailed by, heard these creatures growling and roaring. But Neptune made the wind blow more strongly, so that they passed very quickly by, for he was afraid that they might come to some harm.
After a time, they came to a place where there was a great woods along the shore, and in the midst of the woods, a river called Tiber. Here they brought their ships to land. Aeneas, his son Ascanius, and some of the Trojans got out on to the shore and sat down under one of the trees to have their dinner. They made plates of dough, and on these they put such fruits as they could find. It was but a

Virgil (70 B.C-19 B.C) , regarded as the greatest Roman poet, known for his epic, the Aeneid (written about 29 B.C.E), which had taken its literary model from Homer 's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey Virgil was born on October 15, 70 B.C.E., in a small village near Mantua in Northern Italy. Publius Vergilius Maro, or Virgil has influenced Western literature for two millennia, but little is known about the man himself. His father was a prosperous landowner, described variously as a "potter" and a "courier", who could afford thorough education for the future poet. Virgil attended school at Cremona and Milan, and then went to Rome, where he studied mathematics, medicine and rhetoric, and completed his studies in Naples. He entered literary circles as an "Alexandrian," the name given to a group of poets who sought inspiration in the sophisticated work of third-century Greek poets also known as Alexandrians. After the battle of Philippi in 42 B.C. Virgil's property was confiscated for veterans. According to some sources it was afterwards restored at the command of Octavian (later styled Augustus). In the following years Virgil spent most of his time in Campania and Sicily, but he had also a house at Rome.

Bust of Julius Caesar Best known for his epic poem, The Aeneid, Virgil (70 19 BC) was regarded by Romans as a national treasure.
His work reflects the relief he felt as civil war ended and the rule of Augustus began.
Rural upbringing
Born a peasant, Virgil was raised on a farm before being educated in the Greek and Roman authors. His rural upbringing influenced all his poetry, especially his earlier work, like the Eclogues.
As he was growing up, Rome was in crisis, with power-hungry nobles fighting between themselves. When he was 20 years old, Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon and began the series of bloody civil wars that would last, on and off, for another 20 years.
Civil war
Virgil hated the instability. The wars affected everyone, even simple farmers. Forced to fight, their farms fell into neglect and ruin. In the Georgics, he mourned the ruined countryside. The poems capture the timeless peacefulness of country life that he desperately wanted to see again.
Although he never married, played no part in public life and lived for years as a near recluse, his poetry won him fame and the friendship of important political players. By the time the Georgics were published, he was a member of the Roman elite.

Sicily As the ships of Aeneas sailed across the sea, they looked back to shore and saw great flames rising up into the sky. What this meant they did not know; but they were sure that Dido was very angry and they feared she might do something terrible.
Before long, there were signs of a great storm. The chief pilot, Palinurus, saw how dark the sky had grown and said to Aeneas, "What do these clouds mean? What is Father Neptune going to do next? We cannot get to Italy while the wind blows like this. Let us clear the decks and have the men put out their oars. We can shift the sails and enter the harbors of Sicily."
"You say well," Aeneas replied. "My dear father, Anchises is buried there. We will stop in Sicily."
