SUMMARY The Gadfly was published in 1897, and its original publishers feared a hostile public reaction to its theme of revolution. Instead, it quickly became a classic of socialism, one of the very first politically aware novels. A story of love and conspiracy, it was based in part on the early life of Sidney Rosenblum, better known as "Reilly Ace of Spies" Voynich's boyfriend at the time. 4. The Voynich Manuscript - Crystalinks
From Crystalinks an illustrated overview of discovery and attempts at translation.
http://www.crystalinks.com/voynich.html
The Voynich Manuscript has been dubbed "The Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World". It is named after its discoverer, the American antique book dealer and collector, Wilfrid M. Voynich, who discovered it in 1912, amongst a collection of ancient manuscripts kept in villa Mondragone in Frascati, near Rome, which had been by then turned into a Jesuit College (closed in 1953). No one knows the origins of the manuscript. Experts believe it is European based on the drawings. They believe it was written in between the 15th and 17th centuries. The manuscript is small, seven by ten inches, but thick, nearly 235 pages. Its pages are filled with hand-written text and crudely drawn illustrations.
The illustrations depict plants, astrological diagrams, and naked women.
The women could represent creation and rebirth of consciousness. These illustrations are strange, but much stranger is the text itself,
because the manuscript is written entirely in a mysterious,
unknown alphabet that has defied all attempts at translation. It is an alphabetic script, but of an alphabet variously reckoned to have from nineteen to twenty-eight letters, none of which bear any relationship to any English or European letter system. The text has no apparent corrections. There is evidence for two different "languages" (investigated by Currier and D'Imperio) and more than one scribe, probably indicating an ambiguous coding scheme.

Voynich manuscript
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Voynich Manuscript Jump to: navigation search The Voynich manuscript The Voynich manuscript is a handwritten book thought to have been written in the 15th or 16th century and comprising about 240 vellum pages, notes 1 most with illustrations. The author, script , and language remain unknown: for these reasons it has been described as "the world's most mysterious manuscript". Generally presumed to be some kind of ciphertext , the Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers , including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II . Yet it has defied all decipherment attempts, becoming a historical cryptology cause célèbre . The mystery surrounding it has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript a subject of both fanciful theories and novels: numerous possible authors have been suggested for it. In 2009, University of Arizona researchers performed C14 dating on the manuscript's vellum, which they assert (with 95% confidence) was made between 1404 and 1438. In addition, the

10. Voynich Manuscript Mailing List
Provides introductory information and links to related sites. Started in 1991 by Jim Reeds and Jim Gillogly.

Voynich Manuscript
Mailing List HQ
This is the headquarters site for VMs-list, the primary mailing list for scholars attempting to read the enigmatic Voynich Manuscript. The list was started in 1991 by Jim Gillogly (then of the RAND Corporation) and Jim Reeds (then of Bell Labs), and it moved here to voynich.net in December 2002. It is managed by the Majordomo program, which allows you to subscribe and unsubscribe yourself. Send mail to the list administrator, Rich SantaColoma , if you need help with the directions.
The tone of the group has been astonishingly civil and mostly scholarly for the almost 20 years of the mailing list's existence, despite differences in background (cryptographers, linguists, botanists, astronomers, paleographers, medievalists, historians, astrologers and even a few crackpots no, of course I don't mean you ); and differences in approach, including half a dozen competing methods of transcribing the Voynich characters. Jim Reeds has written an introduction to the study of the Voynich Ms. Some images from the Voynich Ms. published by the Beinecke Library on their website are mirrored here Mysteries surrounding the Voynich Manuscript have puzzled researchers since the earliest surviving report in the seventeenth century: we have no clear idea of its date, its author, its provenance, the meaning of its script, or even the meaning of its drawings. The first known owner was the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612), who bought it from an unknown seller for 600 ducats. The author of the manuscript was then thought to have been the 13th-century monk and scholar Roger Bacon (1214?-1294?), but this attribution now appears to be much too early.

15. Voynich
Richard SantaColoma s hypothesis connecting the Voynich Manuscript to Cornelius Drebbel.
http://www.santa-coloma.net/voynich_drebbel/voynich.html
This page describes my theory about the possible origins, dating and content of the mysterious Voynich Manuscript
Voynich/Optics
I first show the imagery comparisons behind my reasoning that the Voynich Manuscript contains optics. If certain tubes in the Voynich are optics, it points to the possibility that the Rosicrucian alchemist and inventor, Cornelis Drebbel, may be the author, or somehow involved in its' creation. In 2006 I wrote an article for Renaissance Magazine titled: The Voynich Manuscript: Drebbel's Lost Notebook? (Issue #53, March 2007). This theory began when I saw that certain objects in the Voynich bear a striking resemblance to early microscopes. If they are microscopes, then the author of the Voynich would have been very familiar with this technology. This points to Drebbel, because he was making and selling microscopes by 1620, and probably earlier, and actually made at least one "with three brass legs" (Peiresc letter, 1632). As it turns out, he was also appointed the Chief Alchemist to Rudolf II's court at about the time the Voynich first appears there.

The Voynich Manuscript
I'm hooked. The Voynich Manuscript (VMS) is an engrossing puzzle, and I very much want to know what it says, and how it says it. For anyone new to the puzzle, the voynich.nu site provides an excellent introduction, as well as more in-depth material and links to many of the other VMS sites out there. (I'm not the only one who's been sucked in!). This manuscript embodies my interested in medieval herbals, astrology, science and cryptography, all wrapped in a single enticing and enigmatic package. I poked at it a little when putting together a cryptography class in 2004, but didn't develop a serious interest until the winter of 2005-6. Since then, I've tried a number of computational approaches, none successfully. But then, nobody else has succeeded yet either... My analysis and presentation has all been carried out in the open-source statistical package R , since I use it for work and am already adept with it. The code for all my analyses will be available here as Sweave files, which combine statistical code, documentation and presentation into one location. If you are interested in running them, you will need the ecodist package, available from CRAN at the above address. All of my source data files are available online. The Sweave output was converted from T
