[From the phrase boil the pot to provide one's livelihood , from which all Gothic fiction Gothic fiction is an important genre of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. As a genre, it is generally believed to have been invented by the English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto derives, boasts an evil prince, two beautiful princesses, a family curse, and a remote and haunted castle complete with trapdoors, walking wraiths, bleeding statues, and portraits whose eyes follow characters about. After a gigantic helmet falls, quite literally, out of the blue, the only son of Manfred, Prince of Otranto, is found crushed to death. Desperate to secure his line, Manfred rejects his devoted wife to ruthlessly stalk his late son's fiancee. A handsome stranger saves the day.
Walpole's fusion of the exotic and the supernatural may have been original enough to start an enduring literary genre Noun

Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he toured the Continent with his friend Thomas Gray from 1739 to 1741, when the two quarreled and parted. He was elected to Parliament in 1741 and served until 1767, confining himself largely to the role of spectator and defender of his father's memory. In 1747 he acquired a country house, Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, where he built a pseudo-Gothic castle, which became the showplace of England. He was reconciled with Gray in 1745 and later published his friend's Pindaric odes, as well as many first editions of his own works from the private printing press he started at Strawberry Hill in 1757. Walpole's literary reputation rests primarily on his letters, which have great charm and polish and are invaluable pictures of Georgian England. More than 3,000 of his correspondences are extant and cover a period extending from 1732 to 1797. Among his more famous correspondents are Gray, Sir Horace Mann, Thomas Chatterton, and Mme Du Deffand . Walpole succeeded to the earldom of Orford in 1791. Besides his enthusiasm for medieval architecture and trappings, he anticipated the romanticism of the 19th cent. with his Gothic romance

Description
Horace Walpole (1717-1797), as the youngest son of the powerful Whig minister Robert Walpole, grew up at the center of Georgian society and politics and circulated amongst the elite literary, aesthetic, and intellectual circles of his day. His brilliant letters and writings have made him the best-known commentator on the rich cultural life of 18th-century England. In his own day, he was most famous for his extraordinary collections of rare books and manuscripts, antiquities, paintings, prints and drawings, furniture, ceramics, arms and armor, and curiosities, all displayed at his pioneering Gothic Revival house at Strawberry Hill, on the banks of the Thames at Twickenham. This timely and groundbreaking study of the history and reception of Walpole’s collection as it was formed and arranged at Strawberry Hill coincides with a planned restoration of this endangered house.

Jump to: navigation search Walpole, Horace (1717-1797): English Writer. Horace Walpole was an influential political operative during his lifetime and a prolific writer, publishing a wealth of letters, memoirs, and historical commentary as well as the novel which sealed his literary reputation as the eighteenth-century’s most notable gothic artist: The Castle of Otranto . Walpole was born into a wealthy and powerful family, and like his father Sir Robert Walpole, the first earl of Oxford, was educated at Eton and King’s College Cambridge. While at Cambridge, Walpole became friends with the poet Gray, Thomas , and upon graduation in 1739, they traveled together for two years throughout France and Italy. The European tour took its toll on their friendship, though he and Gray would continue to correspond throughout their lives. Back in London, Walpole served as a member of Parliament for six years, and while he retired from politics proper in 1747, he continued to exert his influence as an advisor through his letters and friendships. In his letters, which now fill several dozen volumes, Walpole gave his personal opinion and judgment on major events of his day, such as the Jacobite Trials and Gordon Riots, and with Sir Horace Mann, in particular, he discussed party politics and foreign affairs. Letters to Thomas Gray and Mary Berry reveal much about Walpole’s literary ideas, and thousands of other private letters deliver their autobiographical insights into Walpole’s social and artistic life. Aside from maintaining some social and political influence through his correspondence, Walpole used his letters to recall events he published in works like his

The Castle of Otranto , published on Christmas Eve in 1764 (the year in which James Watt perfected the steam engine, thus laying the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution), more-or-less began the Gothic as we know it. Initally accepted rather favorably, Otranto was villified by the press once it was revealed, in the second edition, that the work was not in fact a translation of an old manuscript but the contemporary creation of the politically and socially well-connected son of a Prime Minister. Walpole's drama The Mysterious Mother , never performed in his lifetime, dealt with another topic that would attract much (scandalized) attention in the Romantic period: incest.

Walpole, Horace (1717-1797) Horace Walpole was the youngest child of one of the most powerful political figures of the eighteenth century and his wealthy and beautiful wife. The great Sir Robert Walpole, considered by many to be the first "prime" minister, ran English government for a generation. Horace hated him as much as he loved the mother whom he saw offended by his father's infidelities. His parentage, nevertheless, gave him a certain stature and sense of self-importance that never left him. At ten, Walpole was sent to Eton College, where he became part of the "Quadruple Alliance" of sensitive literary friends, which included Thomas Gray, the most popular poet of the century, and Richard West, a sensitive and inverted young writer who died in his twenties and was the cause of a deeply moving series of letters and poems between Walpole and Gray.
