Walton, Izaak
(b. Aug. 9, 1593, Stafford, Staffordshire , Eng.d. Dec. 15, 1683, Winchester, Hampshire), English biographer and author of The Compleat Angler , a classic idyll on the joys and stratagems of fishing. After a few years of schooling, Walton was apprenticed to a London ironmonger, acquired a small shop of his own, and began to prosper. In 1608 he was admitted to the Ironmongers' Company. Despite his modest education Walton read widely, developed scholarly tastes, and associated with men of learning, including a number of churchmen. Walton's dwelling and ironmonger's shop was close to St. Dunstan's Church, and he became active in parish affairs (later a vestryman), and a friend and fishing companion of the vicar, John Donne. Donne died in 1631, and when his poems were published two years later Walton composed "An Elegie" for the volume. In 1640 his Life of Donne appeared to accompany a collection of his sermons. The Life was revised and enlarged in 1658. During the Civil Wars Walton, a staunch Royalist, quit London for the relative security of his native Staffordshire. After the Royalist defeat at Worcester in 1651 he took part in a successful adventure to preserve a jewel belonging to Charles II. He spent the remainder of his life reading, writing and editing, fishing, and visiting among the eminent clergymen who were his friends.

WALTON, IZAAK (1593-1683). Biographer, and author of The Compleat Angler s. of a yeoman, was b. at Stafford. Of his earlier years little is known. He carried on business as a hosier in London, in which he made a modest competence, which enabled him to retire at 50, the rest of his long life of 90 years being spent in the simple country pleasures, especially angling, which he so charmingly describes. He was twice m. , first to Rachel Floud, a descendant of Archbishop Cranmer, and second to Ann Ken, half-sister of the author of the Evening Hymn. His first book was a Life of Dr. Donne (1640), followed by Lives of Sir Henry Wotton (1651), Richard Hooker (1662), George Herbert (1670), and Bishop Sanderson (1678). All of these, classics in their kind, short, but simple and striking, were coll. into one vol. His masterpiece, however, was The Compleat Angler , the first ed. of which was pub. in 1653. Subsequent ed. were greatly enlarged; a second part was added by Charles Cotton ( q.v.

Walton, Izaak, , English writer. He wrote one of the most famous books in the English language, The Compleat Angler; or, the Contemplative Man's Recreation. The first edition appeared in 1653, and it was reissued frequently with additional material; the last edition in Walton's lifetime appeared in 1676. The book not only describes the technique of angling, but draws a picture of peace and simple virtue that was Walton's protest against the civil wars taking place at the time. He also wrote several biographies, including ones of John Donne (1640), Sir Henry Wotton (1651), and George Herbert (1670), all of whom were his friends. See study by D. Novarr (1958); J. R.
