edit Early life
Watson grew up in Travelers Rest, South Carolina and attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. A precocious student, he entered college at the age of 16 (he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Order ) and left with a masters degree aged 21. He spent a year as a principal for grade school, then entered the University of Chicago to study philosophy with John Dewey on the recommendation of Furman professor, Gordon Moore, who was a major proponent of the view that life and the behavior of living organisms could be explained entirely by chemistry and physics without recourse to a supposed "vital force". Accordingly, Loeb taught that all behavior was dictated by instinct and learned responses to stimuli.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
"The panorama of Cleveland's Cuyahoga Valley shows bridges of all sizes, styles, functions and types. We are chronicling a history of bridges, but with special attention to the influence of our environment upon them. By discovering this influence as it has operated in the past, we can design and build with better understanding for the future. Descriptions are sometimes technical and detailed, sometimes sociological and historical, and sometimes humorous, chatty, even legendary. In short, there is something for everyone-for the engineer, for the local historian, for the sociologist, and, last but not least, we hope, for the general reader who has a bit of curiosity." Dr. Watson, a former Professor of English and Engineering at Fenn College, initiated and from 1940 to 1970, taught a pioneer course in the History of Civil Engineering. In 1983 she donated The Wilbur and Sara Ruth Watson Bridge Book Collection to the Cleveland State University Library.

John Watson was born in South Carolina in 1878 and grew up on a farm. His father left the family when John was about 13. Watson claimed to have been unruly and a poor student as a youngster, and by all accounts he seemed destined to follow his father's model of violence and recklessness. But he had ambition, a certain courage, and considerable skill at self-promotion: He entered Furman University at age 16. He received a masters degree after five years and went on to the University of Chicago to pursue a doctorate in psychology and philosophy. Along the way, he dropped the philosophy and received his PhD in psychology in 1903. Five years later, Johns Hopkins University appointed him professor of experimental and comparative psychology. By then Watson had already formed ideas that would become a whole branch of psychology: behaviorism . He studied the biology, physiology, and behavior of animals, inspired by the recent work of

John Broadus Watson (January 9, 1878 – September 25, 1958) was an American psychologist who established the psychological school of behaviorism . He did extensive research on animal behavior, but is perhaps best known for having claimed that he could take any 12 healthy infants and, by applying behavioral techniques, create whatever kind of person he desired. Watson also conducted the controversial "Little Albert" experiment, and his own personal life generated scandal. Nevertheless his work had great significance for the field of psychology, leading to the development of research methods and new understanding, despite its limitations.

CHILD PSYCHOLOGY are largely unknown to modern psychologists, who see little of them beyond textbook summaries. Based on an objective, empirical foundation, the best early twentieth-century research in developmental physiology, and his own work with animals, Watson adopted a life-span developmental approach which emphasized combining observational research with laboratory work employing the precision of Pavlovian principles. Watson was one of the first psychologists to argue for the impressive cognitive competence of infants, question the prevailing prejudice of inevitable intellectual decline in old age, and, unlike other pioneering developmentalists such as G. S TANLEY H ALL , J EAN P IAGET , and A RNOLD G ESELL Animal Education (1903), an analysis of the relationship between brain and behavior development in rats, suggested to Watson that infant humans, like infant rats, were not the passive, cognitively limited organisms that some of his contemporaries suggested.
