My graduate students and I are involved in the following research.
    Implantable intracranial pressure monitor
We are working with Department of Neurological Surgery Professor Joshua Medow to develop a permanently implanted passive pressure sensor to measure intracranial pressure (ICP). At anytime, the hydrocephalic patient, care taker, or physician can hold an external display device over the internal sensor coil and display the ICP and waveform to determine if the ICP has increased due to shunt obstruction which can require surgical intervention. Pressure will (1) deform the membrane and (2) move interior inductor coils closer together to (3) cause changes in resonant frequency. The external display device coil will link inductively to the internal sensor coil to measure the change in resonant frequency and convert it to pressure.

Webster's life is obscure, and the dates of his birth and death are not known. His father, a coach maker also named John Webster, married a blacksmith's daughter named Elizabeth Coates on 4 November 1577, and it is likely that Webster was born not long after in or near London . On 1 August 1598, "John Webster, lately of the New Inn" was admitted to the Middle Temple , one of the Inns of Court; in view of the legal interests evident in his dramatic work; this is possibly the playwright. Webster married the 17-year-old Sara Peniall on 18 March 1606, and their first child, John, was

    Brief biography.

John Webster Born sometime around 1580, John Webster was to be the last of the great Elizabethan playwrights. Much like many of his contemporaries, little is known of the poet himself. There was a John Webster admitted to the Middle Temple on August 1, 1598. If this Webster and the dramatist were one and the same, it would explain the many legal allusions in his plays and the inclusion of trial scenes in The White Devil, The Devil's Law Case, and Appius and Virginia The earliest known records of Webster's employment as a playwright are found in the diary of theatre manager Phillip Henslowe at the beginning of the new century. Among the payments which Henslowe noted in his diary in 1602 were those made to Webster, Anthony Munday, Thomas Middleton , Michael Drayton "and the rest" for a play entitled Caesar's Fall . Over the next decade or so, Henslowe's records show Webster collaborating with Dekker and Heywood, writing a prologue to Marston's Malcontent , and composing his two masterpieces The White Devil and The Duchess of Malfi Webster has sometimes been criticized for the limited scope of his plays. He knows nothing, for instance, of the tenderness and pleasant fantasy of Shakespeare. It was mankind's anguish and evil alone which captured his imagination. But his verse is poetry of the highest order and holds its own with the best of

    Webster, John
    (b. c. c. English dramatist whose The White Divel and The Duchess of Malfi are generally regarded as the paramount 17th-century English tragedies apart from those of Shakespeare. Little is known of Webster's life. His preface to Monuments of Honor, his Lord Mayor's Show for 1624, says he was born a freeman of the Merchant Taylors Company. Possibly he was an actor who became a playwright later in life. He may be the John Webster mentioned among the English Comedians under Robert Browne in the service (1595) of the German landgrave Maurice of Hesse-Kassel, or the John Webster who was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1598. He was probably dead by 1634. Apart from his two major plays and Appius and Virginia c. 1608) and The Devils Law-case c. 1620; published 1623), his dramatic work consists of collaborations (not all extant) with leading writers, including Thomas Dekker (chiefly), Thomas Middleton, Michael Drayton, John Ford, and perhaps Phillip Massinger. Eight extant plays and some nondramatic verse and prose are wholly or partly his; the most standard edition is The Complete Works of John Webster

    John Webster
English playwright and poet. He is best known for his two tragedies, The White Devil (1609-12) and The Duchess of Malfi (1612-13), and his tragicomedy The Devil's Law-Case (1617-21). He was a dramatist of great poetic power who is now considered second only to Shakespeare among the playwrights of his day. Another notable work is his poem on the death of Prince Henry, A Monumental Column (1613). He also wrote plays with other dramatists, including Dekker, Rowley, Ford, Fletcher and Marston.

    Pleasure of life, what is't?
Only the good hours of an ague The Jacobean age was one of questioning and uncertainty about many issues, such as religion, politics and law. At the same time it was rediscovering the potency of Classical texts of Rome and Greece, and reinterpreting tragic form to suit its own ends. The Duchess of Malfi is a revenge tragedy, but Webster has used the form for much more than just its entertainment value; he has used it as a vehicle for the exploration of some themes relevant to the society of his time. Webster based his plot on a true story set in Italy, and kept the Italian setting because like Shakespeare and other playwrights of his day, he had to use politically-acceptable foreign settings in which to explore ideas such as those presented in The Duchess of Malfi , (which were really commentaries on the England of their own era), to do with inequality, injustice, and corruption, without causing outrage in response to his work.
