95. Noah Webster Speech On The Anniversary Of The Declaration Of Independence
Text of speech given by Noah Webster in 1802.
http://www.lexrex.com/enlightened/writings/webster_decl.htm
An Oration on the Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence Noah Webster, New Havern, 1802 AN ORATION Such are the mistakes of reformers; and such have been the illusions of the enthusiastic friends of the revolution. Their imagination has been warmed with the belief, that the sequestered position of America, would exempt her citizens from the troubles which harrass Europe; that a general diffusion of knowledge, and superior attainments in policy, would enable them to form constitutions of government, less defective than any which have preceded them; and that their public virtue would secure a faithful, uncorrupt, and impartial administration. Whenever a doubt has been suggested, respecting the duration of a free republic, it has been repelled by one general answer, that the system of representation, supposed to be a modern improvement in free constitutions, is calculated effectually to obviate the evils which other states have experienced, from legislatures consisting of popular assemblies. But does the wide ocean that rolls between the two continents, detach our citizens from a deep interest in the affairs of Europe? Will our commerce, a productive source of our wealth, permit a separation of interests? And will not our prejudices and our wants, in spite of reason and patriotism, continue, for a long period, to link us to the policy, the opinions, and the interest of European nations?

Noah Webster
Born: West Hartford; October 16, 1758
Died: New Haven; May 28, 1843 Entry by Albert E. Van Dusen see also: A Connecticut Yankee Doodle Dandy Lexicographer, schoolteacher, and philologist, Webster was graduated in 1778 from Yale College where he became imbued with revolutionary ideals and political independence. Trying schoolteaching, he soon turned to the study of law, being admitted to the bar in 1781. Soon afterwards he began preparation of a book which heralded a new system of American education, one not dependent on England. In 1783 he published the first volume of A Grammatical Institute of the English Language , later known popularly as the "Blue-Backed Speller." He conceived it as a demonstration of his fervent belief in liberty and cultural independence for the United States and his desire for uniformity in speech and language. During the 1780s he wrote and lectured widely on the need for a powerful central government and an increased sense of nationalism, believing that only a strong union could insure liberty. Parts two and three of his Institute , a grammar and reader, appeared in 1784 and 1785, completing his plan for the improvement of American education.
