    George Mackay Brown was the youngest of six children, born to John Brown, a tailor and postman, and Mhairi Mackay , who had been brought up in Braal Strathy Sutherland as a native Gaelic speaker . He was born on the 17th of October 1921. Except for spells as a mature student in mainland Scotland, Mackay Brown lived all of his life in Stromness in the Orkney Islands . Due to illness his father was restricted in his work and received no pension. His uncle Jimmy Brown’s body was found in Stromness harbour in 1935, probably because of suicide ; there was a family history of depression. His youth was marked by poverty and it was from this time that he was affected by tuberculosis . This illness kept him from entering the army at the start of World War II and it afflicted him to such an extent that he could not live a normal working life;

The British author George Orwell Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four . Familiarity with the novels, documentaries, essays, and criticism he wrote during the 1930s and later has since established him as one of the most important and influential voices of the century. Orwell's parents were members of the Indian Civil Service, and, after an education at Eton College in England, Orwell joined (1922) the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, an experience that later found expression in the novel Burmese Days (1934). His first book, Down and Out in Paris and London A Clergyman's Daughter Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1936), and Coming Up for Air (1939). His major works of the period were two documentaries: The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), a detailed, sympathetic, and yet objective study of the lives of nearly impoverished miners in the Lancashire town of Wigan; and Homage to Catalonia (1938), which recounts his experiences fighting for the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War. Orwell was wounded, and, when the Communists attempted to eliminate their allies on the far left, fought against them and was forced to flee for his life. Orwell's two best-known books reflect his lifelong distrust of autocratic government, whether of the left or right:

Individual Whales Finback whale Lunch: Lunch has very little dorsal fin left and was given that name because it looks like a shark came along and bit it's fin off for "lunch". In truth, Lunch lost it's fin when it was hit by a twin engine boat propeller. Lunch has been seen throughout the Gulf of Maine since 1982 but was first observed with a calf in 1995. The calf was given the name "T-time" for a T shaped scar on it's side. Lunch is often a very approachable whale, we have seen her on many of our trips over the years, and always look forward to our first meeting of the year. Finback whale George: George was the first finback cataloged by Allied Whale back in 1977, so was named after the first U.S. president George Washington. If we are lucky enough to see George this summer it will mark the 20th year that this whale has been known. George happens to be a very big finback whale with a fin which is thin and pointed at the end. George's fin has a small slice out of the bottom trailing edge and two nicks on the top about a foot apart. Although George has never been seen with a calf it is not known whether this whale is male or female. This past summer Allied Whale researchers were able to collect a skin sample from George and through DNA testing will soon be able to answer this question.

    David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture Series
    David L. Kubal (1936-1982) was raised in Chicago, attended Marmion Military Academy, and received his B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame. He studied at Northwestern University and returned to his alma mater for a Ph.D. After teaching at Michigan State University, he came to Cal State L.A. in 1968, where he taught until his untimely death in January 1982. In 1972, Prof. Kubal published Outside the Whale: George Orwell's Art and Politics . He then devoted himself to our graduate program in English, and from his efforts to strengthen and formalize the postgraduate teaching of literature he was inspired to read and think with increasing depth and breadth in the entire Western literary tradition. This resulted in his teaching a series of seminars on the nineteenth-century novel and Victorian culture, and in his publishing articles in journals such as The Yale Review and The Kenyon Review . The thought and writing of these years culminated in The Consoling Intelligence: Responses to Literary Modernism , a collection of essays published posthumously in 1982.
