First English edition from American sheets with the title page a cancel. Cloth at the top of the spine repaired, some random light foxing else a very good copy lacking the rare dustwrapper. According to Garrison one of only 250 copies of the English edition. The American edition itself is quite uncommon, this edition many times more so. Inscribed by Wharton in an uncharacteristically light tone to her lifelong friend Daisy Chanler "Dear Daisy, In lieu of a dreary book here's a silly one from yr. affte. Edith May 1909." The inscription is perhaps some indication of Wharton's self-consciousness about these poems as they were the direct expression of her passion for Morton Fullerton, with whom she was engaged in an ongoing affair. Chanler was one of Wharton's closest friends. Yale's Beinecke Library has over a hundred letters from Wharton to Chanler that span a fifty year period. Biography of Edith Wharton (1862-1938)
Study Guides and Essays by Edith Wharton The Age of Innocence The Custom of the Country Ethan Frome The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton House of Mirth Summer Edith Wharton Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones to George and Lucretia Jones in New York City on January 24, 1862. She belonged to an aristocratic New York family with ancestry dating back three centuries. As a daughter of society , her role was to learn the mannerisms and rituals expected of well-bred young women in those days. Later she would rebel against this role but as a child she was schooled at home and had the privilege of use of her father's extensive library. She was privately educated at home and in Europe by governesses and tutors. In 1885, Wharton married Teddy Wharton, who was twelve years older than she was. They lived a life of relative ease with homes in New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Slowly, Wharton grew dissatisfied with the roles of wife and society matron. When she discovered Teddy had taken money from her to provide a home for his mistress in Boston, their marriage fell apart. Also, Wharton had met and fallen in love with Morton Fullerton and had been sexually awakened as a 46 year old woman living virtually on her own in Paris. Wharton divorced in 1913. Between 1900 and 1938, Wharton created many, many novels. The publication of the

Somewhere in this book, Wharton observes that clever liars always come up with good stories to back up their fabrications, but that really clever liars don't bother to explain anything at all. This is the kind of insight that makes The Age of Innocence so indispensable. Wharton's story of the upper classes of Old New York, and Newland Archer's impossible love for the disgraced Countess Olenska, is a perfectly wrought book about an era when upper-class culture in this country was still a mixture of American and European extracts, and when "society" had rules as rigid as any in history.
A novel so dense with cultural artifacts as to seem to be from an alien planet, The Age of Innocence shows us a world where certain virtues were of paramount importance, and other modern-day virtues, such as self-determination, were subordinate to the mores of the culture as a whole. The central struggle, between Newland Archer and his conscience, is resolved and unresolved in subtle, understated ways. Wharton gently pokes fun at the world of Old New York society in which she lived, such as when Newland is asked how he will spend the afternoon and he replies that he will "save it", but she also admits, tacitly, throughout this wonderful work, that members of that society could not violate its values without destroying themselves, and, most importantly, also destroying the people around them.
