Ezra Cornell (1807-1874), Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918), and the Establishment of Cornell University
From a Cabin in the Woods
Ezra Cornell was born in New Britain (the Bronx), New York. His family moved to DeRuyter in Madison County when Cornell was young. The eldest of 11 children of Quaker parents, Cornell was basically self-taught. In 1828 Cornell followed Fall Creek to the small town of Ithaca at the southern end of Cayuga Lake where he found work at a mill owned by Jeremiah Beebe. Unfortunately, Beebe sold the mill and Cornell lost his job. He left Ithaca and his wife and family to seek his fortune elsewhere. While in Philadelphia, he came upon the drawing of the proposed Girard College to be left to the city's orphans by Stephen Girard. The dream of being able to found a college was one he never gave up. Cornell ended up in Maine where he met Samuel B. Morse who had recently invented the telegraph. Cornell ran the lines for Morse and worked hard at the telegraph business, but he seemed to lack the necessary business skills to make a success of it, having acquired many small, disconnected telegraph companies that produced little profit.

INTRODUCTION My book is ready for the printer, and as I begin this preface my eye lights upon the crowd of Russian peasants at work on the Neva under my windows. With pick and shovel they are letting the rays of the April sun into the great ice barrier which binds together the modern quays and the old granite fortress where lie the bones of the Romanoff Czars.
This barrier is already weakened; it is widely decayed, in many places thin, and everywhere treacherous; but it is, as a whole, so broad, so crystallized about old boulders, so imbedded in shallows, so wedged into crannies on either shore, that it is a great danger. The waters from thousands of swollen streamlets above are pressing behind it; wreckage and refuse are piling up against it; every one knows that it must yield. But there is danger that it may resist the pressure too long and break suddenly, wrenching even the granite quays from their foundations, bringing desolation to a vast population, and leaving, after the subsidence of the flood, a widespread residue of slime, a fertile breeding-bed for the germs of disease.

Biography:
Andrew Dickson White
Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918), American educator and diplomat, helped found Cornell University and became its first president. Andrew Dickson White was born in Homer, N.Y., on Nov. 7, 1832. At the age of 17 he entered the Episcopal-oriented Geneva (Hobart) College in western New York, but he disliked it and after a year dropped out and entered Yale. Upon graduating in 1853, he and his friend Daniel Gilman went to Europe. White studied languages and history in Paris and Berlin, and during 1854-1855 he served for 6 months as an attaché to the American minister in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1856 White received his master of arts degree from Yale and then accepted an offer to be professor of history at the nonsectarian University of Michigan. The young, innovative teacher was an immediate success. During his 6 years there he conceived of a new university for central New York that would be shorn of outworn traditions and would offer the broadest opportunities for study in higher education.

    A.D. White Architectural Photos
In the first stages of our Flickr endeavor, we offered a small sample from one of our prize collections: the Andrew Dickson White Architectural Photographs Collection . White, Cornell University's first president, established the collection by donating several thousand images from his personal architectural library. We have a great deal of description about the items in this collection, thanks to our dedicated librarians and catalogers.
We're hoping you can help us add even more to this collection. We have place names for nearly every photo, and we've tried to automatically geocode them so that they show up on Flickr's map . But all of these photos occupy a very specific place in a city, and you can help us pinpoint the exact locations!
