White Sands Missile Range Public Affairs Office
We have 1 book for this author. White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), formerly known as the White Sands Proving Grounds is a rocket range in New Mexico operated by the United States Army. The range covers an area of almost 3,200 mi², approximately three times the size of Rhode Island, making it the largest military installation in the United States. The range is located in Doña Ana County, New Mexico and Otero County, New Mexico. It is mostly within the Tularosa Basin (a valley between the Organ Mountains, San Andres Mountains and the Sacramento Mountains) but it also includes the northern reaches of the Jornada del Muerto. WSMR is located on U.S. 70 between Alamogordo and Las Cruces; the highway is sometimes closed for safety reasons while tests are conducted on the missile range.
Description
Soldiers in nearby White Sands National Monument The Range gets its name from the white sands that are spread over many miles in the area. These sands are composed of gypsum crystals, which have leached out of the surrounding mountains. A distinctive ecology survives in this desert. Adjacent to the Range, but not part of its active perimeter, is the White Sands National Monument. The swath of white sands extends from WSMR, through White Sands National Monument, and into nearby Holloman Air Force Base. This large expanse of bright sand is clearly visible from earth orbit, especially since the area is rarely clouded over.

Trinity Site
On July 16, 1945 the world changed with the explosion of the first atomic bomb. The explosion took place at Trinity Site which is on what is now White Sands Missile Range. Trinity is a national historic landmark which is open to the public twice a year. The following links will provide you with information on the history of the site, how to get there and some of the historic images. Included on the Trinity Site tour is Ground Zero where the atomic bomb was placed on a 100-foot steel tower. A small monument now marks the spot. Visitors also see the McDonald ranch house where the world's first plutonium core for a bomb was assembled. The missile range provides historical photographs and a Fat Man bomb casing for display. There are no ceremonies or speakers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NASA-MCDONNELL DOUGLAS ROCKET TO EVALUATE NEW TECHNOLOGY HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., July 30, 1996 Advanced technology materials and components will continue to be evaluated with Wednesday's scheduled test flight of an experimental reusable rocket at the U.S. Army's White Sands Missile Range, N.M. Liftoff of the experimental NASA-McDonnell Douglas Clipper Graham launch vehicle is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MDT. "Just as in an aircraft test program, each successive test flight of the Clipper Graham is more complicated and allows us to evaluate vehicle performance under the dynamic conditions of flight," said David Schweikle, program manager of the Delta Clipper-Experimental Advanced (DC-XA) program. Maximum altitude will be 4,100 feet during the 2-minute, 20-second flight. The 43-foot-high rocket will travel laterally 2,800 feet. During Wednesday's flight the rocket's nose will make a sweeping arc as it rotates from a near upright position. By performing a high-angle of attack, 50-degree sweep, engineers will be able to evaluate dynamic forces on the test vehicle. Under a cooperative agreement with NASA, McDonnell Douglas integrated advanced technology components into the vertical-takeoff, vertical-landing rocket.

Residents learned about a new Army energy conservation plan that will be going into effect next year during the Oct. 19 Housing Town Hall meeting at the Frontier Club. Under the plan, a home’s average electrical use will be evaluated, and residents expending an unusual amount of electricity will be billed for the excess.

In 1975, the 51,500 acre site was declared a national landmark. This landmark includes the base camp, where the scientist and support groups lived, Ground Zero where the bomb exploded, and the McDonald Ranch House. Today, Ground Zero, the McDonald Ranch House, and an old instrumentation bunker are all that remain of the original site.
Although there were many lives lost when an atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, it ended the war sooner. Because of the massive destruction caused by the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, the country surrendered Aug. 14, 1945.
