by Allan Levine Two unlikely arrivals in Honduras more than a century ago were William Sidney Porter (1862-1910), better known as O. Henry, perhaps the greatest American 20th century shortstory writer, and Alphonso (Al) Jennings (1863-1961), attorney, train robber and Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate who ultimately ended up in Hollywood, California, working in the motion picture industry making Westerns. However, these two pals came to a near fatal adventure on the north coast of Honduras and wound up serving time for other escapades in the same U.S. prison.
O. Henry
Al Jennings What happened afterward was anyone’s guess, because everybody involved was deliriously drunk. The following day the governor of the department called the American consulate in Tegucigalpa to thank the American patriots for “… quelling the revolution. What incredible hombres, these Americanos.” By day’s end, the government and the rebels had kissed and made-up. The rebel leader demanded American blood — that of Jennings and Porter — and the American consul advised their immediate departure.

I found no entry, but every few months I would again rummage that stout red volume with the same intention, forgetting that I had done so before without success. It seemed hardly credible that a critic so brilliant had been overlooked by the industrious compilers of that work, which includes hundreds of hacks and fourflushers. When gathering the contents of this book I tried again, still without result. I wrote to Mr. Firkins pleading for biographical details; modestly, but firmly, he denied me.

Versatile Entrepreneur Builds Carolina Timeshare Empire By Rosalie E. Leposky Peppertree Resorts, Ltd., is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 1997. A prominent regional development firm based in Asheville, North Carolina, Peppertree owes its growth and success to the creative dynamism of C. Wayne Kinser (1934- August 31, 2003), its founder, chairman, and president; and to an executive staff consisting primarily of longtime associates and business partners who help to implement Kinser's ideas. "Wayne is a visionary," says Donald K. Clayton, a Peppertree employee since 1984 who is the firm's senior vice president of marketing. "The first time Wayne looks at a raw piece of property, he envisions how it should be developed. Generally, he is right," says Kenneth C. "Ken" Crump, Peppertree's senior vice president of construction resort development, who has worked with Kinser since 1986. C. Wayne Kinser Fourteen and Growing Peppertree currently is developing and/or managing 14 mountain and beachfront timeshare resorts with almost 44,500 members: Kinser began his first timeshare project, Peppertree Vacation Club, in 1977 on the grounds of The Great Smokies Hilton Resort (now a Holiday Inn Sunspree) in Asheville, North Carolina. The six-acre project has 18 buildings, 28 timeshare units, and 1,310 members.

Getting to know my house plants: Rubber plant, Ficus elastica
Permalink
Pat Feinstein Email "What the shamrock is to Ireland the rubber plant is to the dweller in flats and furnished rooms..." - The Rubber Plant's Story by O. Henry ( William Sidney Porter
Rubber plant (Ficus elastica), a cultivated, ornamental house plant, belongs in the family Moraceae (fig family), a native of India and southeast Asia. It is said to be among the oldest plants used as a house plant worldwide. It requires no special maintenance, is adaptable to low light in moist, well-drained soil and occasional fertilizing.
The rubber plant I have is relatively small and has been slow growing since it was given to me 2 years ago. I wish I had paid more attention to it from the beginning and recorded how tall it was or how many leaves there were on the plant. I wonder if it could have started out with just 3 leaves like the one in the O. Henry's story. There are now seven leaves on the plant and the top four leaves appear to be very young.
I have always appreciated the rubber plant. The large, oblong, thick, dark, emerald-color leaves represent special characters/qualities that I associate with toughness, richness, beauty and inner strength. I now look at the plant with fondness and quiet admiration.

The Page Begins Here Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking
Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking,
by O. Henry [pen name of William Sidney Porter (1862-1910); this story appeared in the collection, Roads of Destiny, 1909]
It was with much caution that Whistling Dick slid back the door of the box-car, for Article 5716, City Ordinances, authorized (perhaps unconstitutionally) arrest on suspicion, and he was familiar of old with this ordinance. So, before climbing out, he surveyed the field with all the care of a good general.
Whistling Dick's red head popped suddenly back into the car. A sight too imposing and magnificent for his gaze had been added to the scene. A vast, incomparable policeman rounded a pile of rice sacks and stood within twenty yards of the car. The daily miracle of the dawn, now being performed above Algiers, received the flattering attention of this specimen of municipal official splendor. He gazed with unbiased dignity at the faintly glowing colors until, at last, he turned to them his broad back, as if convinced that legal interference was not needed, and the sunrise might proceed unchecked. So he turned his face to the rice bags, and, drawing a flat flask from an inside pocket, he placed it to his lips and regarded the firmament.
Whistling Dick, professional tramp, possessed a half-friendly acquaintance with this officer. They had met several times before on the levee at night, for the officer, himself a lover of music, had been attracted by the exquisite whistling of the shiftless vagabond. Still, he did not care, under the present circumstances, to renew the acquaintance. There is a difference between meeting a policeman upon a lonely wharf and whistling a few operatic airs with him, and being caught by him crawling out of a freight-car. So Dick waited, as even a New Orleans policeman must move on some timeperhaps it is a retributive law of natureand before long "Big Fritz" majestically disappeared between the trains of cars.
