Charlotte Mary Yonge was born in Otterbourne Hampshire England , on 11 August 1823 to William Yonge and Fanny Yonge, née Bargus. She was educated at home by her father, studying Latin, Greek, French, Euclid , and algebra. Her father's lessons could be harsh: He required a diligence and accuracy that were utterly alien to me. He thundered at me so that nobody could bear to hear it, and often reduced me to tears, but his approbation was so delightful that it was a delicious stimulus.... I believe, in spite of all breezes over my innate slovenliness, it would have broken our hearts to leave off working together. And we went on till I was some years past twenty. Yonge's devotion to her father was life-long and her relationship with him seems to have been for her the standard for all other relationships, including marriage.

his website is created to give Gutenberg readers some information about the life and works of Miss Yonge. Although her novels were very popular in the nineteenth century, very few of them were reprinted in the twentieth, and now most are out of print and difficult to obtain. A few are available from booksellers on the Internet, so I have included a link to ABE books. We hope to publish her best and most popular stories on the web, mainly on the Project Gutenberg site, but this will take several years. Please come back to this page for frequent updates! Among the features on this page is a short biography of Miss Yonge, and a description of the village of Otterbourne where she lived her whole life. Information about each of her books will be posted here as the books become available on the Gutenberg website. Miss Yonge was a prolific writer, and this page will be continually under construction as more items of interest are added. Comprehensive Web Pages for the Charlotte M Yonge Fellowship will be found by clicking on the right-hand button below. They also have links to many other CMY pages.

Charlotte M. Yonge
Many famous writers and artists were not so during their lifetime, but became more popular or famous after their death. Quite the opposite with Charlotte Yonge. In fact, few have heard or even know of her now. During her lifetime she was well-known and her books were read and admired by Louisa May Alcott, Lord Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Lewis Carroll, and many others. She wrote more than 200 books which includes school books, religious works, historical novels, and tales of everyday life which won her the hearts of many young readers during her time. Young Folks History of Rome History of England and History of France are among several great books for homeschoolers! See quote below, found in an old out-of-print, short story written by Louisa May Alcott, discussing the value of reading good books.
"I would take Alice's advice and read up a little now; it's so nice to know useful things, and be able to find help and comfort in good books when trouble comes, as Ellen Montgomery and Fleda did, and Ethel, and the other girls in Miss Yonge's stories," said Eva, earnestly, remembering how much the efforts of those natural little heroines had helped her in her own struggles for self-control and the cheerful bearing of the burdens which come to all. "
The quote above is found from a book published in the late 1800's. If they thought such books were of high moral content, what would we think of them today considering the moral decline of our time?
