Emile Zola (1840-1902) French novelist and critic, the founder of the Naturalist movement in literature. Zola redefined Naturalism as "Nature seen through a temperament." Among Zola's most important works is his famous Rougon-Macquart cycle (1871-1893), which included such novels as L'ASSOMMOIR (1877), about the suffering of the Parisian working-class, NANA (1880), dealing with prostitution, and GERMINAL (1885), depicting the mining industry. Zola's open letter 'J'accuse,' on January 13, 1898, reopened the case of the Jewish Captain, Alfred Dreyfus, sentenced to Devil's Island. "I am little concerned with beauty or perfection. I don't care for the great centuries. All I care about is life, struggle, intensity. I am at ease in my generation." (from My Hates Anatole France , who failed several times but finally passed. According to one story, Zola was sometimes so broke that he ate sparrows that he trapped on his window sill. Zola began to write under the influence of the romantics. Before his breakthrough, Zola worked as a clerk in a shipping firm and then in the sales department of the publishing house of Louis-Christophe-Francois-Hachette. He also contributed literary columns and art reviews to the Cartier de Villemessant's newspapers. Zola supported the struggle of Edouard Manet and Impressionists; Manet thanked him with a portrait. As a political journalist Zola did not hide his antipathy toward the French Emperor Napoleon III, who used the Second Republic as a springboard to become Emperor.

mile Zola (1840-1902) , French author of many works influential in the naturalism literary school including his series of twenty novels written between 1871 and 1893 that follow the Rougon Macquart family starting with The Fortune of the Rougons (1871). From the Author's Preface; "I wish to explain how a family, a small group of human beings, conducts itself in a given social system after blossoming forth and giving birth to ten or twenty members, who, though they may appear, at the first glance, profoundly dissimilar one from the other, are, as analysis demonstrates, most closely linked together from the point of view of affinity. Heredity, like gravity, has its laws. By resolving the duplex question of temperament and environment, I shall endeavour to discover and follow the thread of connection which leads mathematically from one man to another. And when I have possession of every thread, and hold a complete social group in my hands, I shall show this group at work, participating in an historical period; I shall depict it in action, with all its varied energies, and I shall analyse both the will power of each member, and the general tendency of the whole."

    Emile Zola Biography
    Writer
Emile Zola was a French journalist and novelist known for his series of 20 novels known collectively as Les Rougon-Macquart (1871-93). Zola's style was called literary naturalism; his novels were attacked and even banned for their frankness and sordid detail, and caused quite a bit of controversy in their day. The same traits made him a best-selling author and a star of French literature in his day. In 1898 he then further incurred the wrath of French officials when he published the open letter "J'Accuse," in defense of Alfred Dreyfus , an Army officer who had been convicted of treason. Zola was sentenced to prison for libel, fled to England, and was granted amnesty a few months later. He died in Paris from carbon monoxide poisoning the victim of a stopped-up chimney a few months before Dreyfus was officially exonerated. Extra credit : Zola's death is listed as September 28th by some sources, September 29th by others. He died overnight when the chimney on a bedroom stove stopped working, asphyxiating him and nearly killing his wife as well. We accept the 29th, based on a

    Notes
We reprint the Vintage Classics paperback edition (ISBN 0-679-75430-X) with several spelling corrections. We recommend, however, the translation by Stanley and Eleanor Hochman, in the Signet Classic paperback edition (ISBN 0-451-51975-2), because its English is more contemporary and in a few cases is closer to the vulgar French of the original. A Penguin Classics translation is also widely available. Any of these printed books would be easier to read than this online edition. The original text in French has been placed online in ATHENA in Switzerland. Gerard Depardieu , Renaud, Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet, Judith Henry, and Jean-Roger Milo. It was made with the assistance of Region Nord/Pas-de-Calais, Ministere de la Culture et de la Francophone, of Centre Nationale de la Cinematographie, and of Ministere de l'Education Nationale, and supported by Funds Eurimages of the European Council. The film, although it is on two video cartridges, does improve on the book by leaving out many of the author's excesses of bad taste, although we are sorry to see it fails to show the spectacular, cinematic collapse of the mine toward the end of the book. While the working people in the film are treated sympathetically, Zola's treatment in the book veers back and forth, from seeing them as much animals as heroes.
