IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION PROBLEMS
The following problems require the use of implicit differentiation. Implicit differentiation is nothing more than a special case of the well-known chain rule for derivatives. The majority of differentiation problems in first-year calculus involve functions y written EXPLICITLY as functions of x . For example, if then the derivative of y is However, some functions y are written IMPLICITLY as functions of x . A familiar example of this is the equation x y which represents a circle of radius five centered at the origin. Suppose that we wish to find the slope of the line tangent to the graph of this equation at the point (3, -4) . How could we find the derivative of y in this instance ? One way is to first write y explicitly as a function of x . Thus, x y y x and where the positive square root represents the top semi-circle and the negative square root represents the bottom semi-circle. Since the point (3, -4) lies on the bottom semi-circle given by the derivative of y is i.e.

confirms what experienced teachers have always known:
  • No two children are alike. No two children learn in the identical way. An enriched environment for one student is not necessarily enriched for another. In the classroom we should teach children to think for themselves.
Marian Diamond Consequently, it necessarily follows that although essential curricula goals may be similar for all students, methodologies employed in a classroom must be varied to suit to the individual needs of all children: ie. learning must be differentiated to be effective. Differentiating instruction means creating multiple paths so that students of different abilities, interest or learning needs experience equally appropriate ways to absorb, use, develop and present concepts as a part of the daily learning process. It allows students to take greater responsibility and ownership for their own learning, and provides opportunities for peer teaching and cooperative learning. Differentiating is not new, the concept has been around for at least 2 decades for

53. Visual Calculus - Implicit Differentiation
Then, using several examples, we demonstrate implicit differentiation which is a method for finding the derivative of a function defined implicitly.
http://archives.math.utk.edu/visual.calculus/3/implicit.7/index.html
Objectives: In this tutorial, we define what it means for a realtion to define a function implicitly and give an example. Then, using several examples, we demonstrate implicit differentiation which is a method for finding the derivative of a function defined implicitly. After working through these materials, the student should be able
  • to find the derivative of an implicitly defined function using implicit differentiation;
  • to find the equation of a tangent line to a curve which implicitly defines a function.

  • Discussion Using Flash Comment. Given a differentiable relation F(x,y) = which defines the differentiable function y = f(x) , it is usually possible to find the derivative f' even in the case when you cannot symbolically find f . Techniques of Differentiation
    Maybe the easiest and most useful formulas are the ones that say that the derivative is linear:
    Combined with the formula x n n x n , we see that every polynomial function has a derivative at any point. Example. For P x x x x , we have
    The next two formulas are the most powerful ones. They deal with the derivative of a product and a quotient. They are commonly called the product rule and the quotient rule . We have
    In particular, we have
    So, we have
    which means that the formula x r r x r is also valid for negative exponents. Before we discuss the derivative of trigonometric functions, let us stop here and reflect a little bit more on polynomial functions. Indeed, we saw that the derivative of a polynomial function is also a polynomial function. So we can take another derivative and generate a new function. This function is called the second derivative . We can keep doing this as long as we want to. The functions obtained are called higher derivatives. The common notations used for them are

    In the Handbook for the Inspection of Schools published by OFSTED, differentiation is defined as "The matching of work to the differing capabilities of individuals or groups of pupils in order to extend their learning." Whether a class is setted or mixed ability, it will have a range of different abilities. In their published reports OFSTED have made it clear that differentiation involves recognising the variety of individual needs within a class, planning to meet those needs, providing appropriate delivery and evaluating the effectiveness of the activities in order to maximise the achievements of individual students. The Yalding Village Project is an attempt to provide a systematic approach to differentiation. I have identified nine different strategies for delivering differentiation in history. Differentiation by Content The pupils study different materials within the same topic area but do the same activities.
