Analytical Chemistry
Is About Obtaining Information
Analytical chemistry is the science of obtaining, processing, and communicating information about the composition and structure of matter. In other words, it is the art and science of determining what matter is and how much of it exists.
Has Application in All Areas of Chemistry
Analytical chemists perform qualitative and quantitative analysis; use the science of sampling, defining, isolating, concentrating, and preserving samples; set error limits; validate and verify results through calibration and standardization; perform separations based on differential chemical properties; create new ways to make measurements; interpret data in proper context; and communicate results. They use their knowledge of chemistry, instrumentation, computers, and statistics to solve problems in almost all areas of chemistry. For example, their measurements are used to assure compliance with environmental and other regulations; to assure the safety and quality of food, pharmaceuticals, and water; to support the legal process; to help physicians diagnose disease; and to provide chemical measurements essential to trade and commerce. Analytical chemists are employed in all aspects of chemical research in industry, academia, and government. They do basic laboratory research, develop processes and products, design instruments used in analytical analysis, teach, and work in marketing and law. Analytical chemistry is a challenging profession that makes significant contributions to many fields of science.

Midwest Research Institute Awarded NIH Contract to Provide Analytical Chemistry Services Supporting National Toxicology Program KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct 28, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ In nearly 40 years of continuous support to the National Toxicology Program (NTP), MRI has studied more than 2,000 chemicals and prepared in excess of 5,000 reports on chemicals in everyday use for which there had been limited toxicological data Midwest Research Institute (MRI), one of the nation's leading independent research organizations, with more than 65-years of experience in scientific research, has been awarded a $31 million contract from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Under the 5-year contract, MRI scientists will provide chemical procurement, handling, and analytical chemistry services requested by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) for toxicology studies in progress throughout the U.S. Typically, chemicals selected by NTP for study are chosen because of the high concern for public or occupational health or because of their close structural relationship to chemicals known to have toxic effects at a high exposure index. Chemicals tested for toxicity can include ingredients in foods, personal care products, prescription drugs, nutritional supplements, household cleaners, and lawn care products.

Analytical Chemistry
Analytical Chemistry compromises the development of methodology for investigation of the chemical composition of samples, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and is a fundamental part of several natural sciences. Knowledge of the function and applicability of the methods is an important part as well as the interpretation of the results. The principles of the analytical methods are general and can be applied within all fields of engineering and natural science. The demand for precise and accurate methods is increasing, with emphasis on lower limits of detection. Analytical chemistry is a common tool used within a number of fields such as environmental monitoring, quality control of food, pharmaceutical industry, medicine as well as other research areas in the natural sciences.
Today the research in analytical chemistry at Chalmers is devoted to bio-, environmental- and process analysis, where chromatography, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy and multivariate statistics are essential techniques.
Research profile
  • Bioanalytical chemistry, development of methods for the determination of organic molecules in single cells with confocal Raman spectroscopy, for example chemotherapeutic drugs

These techniques are used in analysing the chemical composition of substances. Chemical analysis may be qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative analysis involves attempting to identify what materials are present in a sample. Answering the question: "What is it?". Quantitative analysis involves determining how much of a material is present in a sample. Answering the question: "How much is present?".
Modern analytical methods make it possible to identify hundreds of components in a single sample and to detect specific substances present in less than one part per million.

American Organization of Analytical Chemists International
AOAC INTERNATIONAL is a 120 year-old not-for-profit scientific association committed to worldwide confidence in analytical results. In fact, "worldwide confidence in analytical results" is AOAC's vision. An AOAC community is a group of analytical scientists in a specific area who share AOAC's vision of worldwide confidence in analytical results and who are brought together by a leader or "champion" to do together what they cannot do alone. Representatives of a community include scientific experts from various government agencies, industry, trade associations, international organizations, and academia.

D. James Donaldson Rebecca Jockusch Shana Kelley Kagan Kerman ... Aaron Wheeler Analytical Chemistry is concerned with providing qualitative and quantitative information about the chemical and structural composition of a sample of matter. A huge variety of samples, from high concentrations of elements in alloy steels to part-per-billion levels of drugs in biological tissue, are handled by the analyst. The field is founded on the conversion of a measured physical property of the species being examined to a usable signal. It is generally divided into two categories, classical and instrumental, on the basis of its historical development. The overall strategy is to prepare a sample correctly, choose a particular method of analysis, and report the results in a meaningful format, which may include a statistical evaluation. We offer competitive stipends as well as top-up awards for NSERC recipients. Students in the Analytical Chemistry programme are excited about their research and highly motivated in their studies. We offer an excellent programme as a result of the combined efforts of faculty and students. A list of recent Analytical Chemistry graduates follows. We hope that you will join us.
