Students who obtain their Ph.D. degree from the Biochemistry Program are trained by a diverse faculty from the Biochemistry Department, and other departments at Tufts Medical School, including Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Cellular and Molecular Physiology, and Pharmacology. Additional Program members are from research departments at Tufts Medical Center, including the Molecular Oncology and Molecular Cardiology Research Institutes. Students spend their first nine months of graduate school enrolled in the Integrated Studies Program ( ISP ), which coordinates both admissions and the academic program for students interested in the Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Physiology, Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology, or Neuroscience Programs. Thus, students interact with and learn from faculty with broad interests in the biomedical sciences before they choose a specific Program in June of the first year. During the first two semesters, students participate in required courses and are introduced to graduate research through four laboratory rotations, which exposes them to cutting edge techniques and potential thesis mentors. Early in the second semester of the second year of graduate school, after the students have been working in their mentor’s laboratory for 8 months, they take a qualifying exam that consists of a written research proposal and on oral defense. The purpose of this exercise is to train, as much as it is to examine, a student in creating and testing scientific hypotheses.

Biochemistry governs all living organisms and living processes. By controlling information flow through biochemical signalling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism; biochemical processes give rise to the seemingly magical phenomenon of life. Much of biochemistry deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins carbohydrates lipids nucleic acids and other biomolecules although increasingly processes rather than individual molecules are the main focus. The future of Biochemistry is to understand how molecules direct all cellular processes, from gene expression to cellular organization to tissue formation and organogenesis. This begins with an understanding of how proteins fold and how enzymes work. But cells are not bags of enzymes; rather, biochemical processes are compartmentalized. For example, signal transduction involves signaling complexes held together by scaffolds, anchors and adaptor proteins. These macromolecular assemblies must be studied in a functional sense to fully understand cell regulation. Biochemical processes are also ordered in relation to the three dimensional organization of a cell. How do cells achieve their polarity, and what molecular constituents drive their ordered division? Now that we can analyze the expression of entire genomes in a single experiment, what kinds of questions can we ask that could never have been asked before?
Students in our department are given opportunities to investigate the biochemical and structural basis of molecular, cellular and developmental processes at a variety of levels of detail and in a variety of organisms ranging from bacteria to mammalian cells. Ongoing research includes studies of protein and RNA folding and catalysis by protein enzymes and ribozymes; DNA replication and recombination; gene regulation; cell motility and molecular motors; protein targeting and transport in the cell; cell adhesion and recognition; intercellular signaling; methods of isolating, and analyzing and altering genes and entire genomes.

Biochemistry is the study of chemical reactions involved with living beings. Biochemical studies include DNA , adrenalin, blood proteins , hormones, and all other components of life reproduction , and genetics. The study of biochemistry is very diverse and involves enzymes , nucleic acids, carbohydrates sugars proteins , and lipids. Enzymes are special types of protein that act to speed up a chemical reaction in a living thing. The function of enzymes is to start, speed up and help chemical reactions, and lower the activation energy. There are a few enzymes that are not proteins but ribonucleic acids, which are called ribozymes. Nucleic acids are polymers of nucleotides. Nucleotides are made of three things: a sugar, a phosphate, and a nitrogen base. Nucleic acids are the building blocks for living organisms. Though I've taught this course many times, the lab curriculum continues to evolve. By now I think I'm getting pretty close to a satisfactory set of exercises. I've separated my discussion into two groups: those exercises I like and will continue to use and those that I have tried but, for various reasons, have not kept. Below are my descriptions of each exercise with comments about their good and bad points. I would appreciate your comments and welcome your questions.

If you had visited Biology4Kids you may recognize the topics of this section. We felt it was more appropriate to have the biochemistry section here on Chem4Kids. It is one of the crossover fields of chemistry. Biochemists have to understand both the living world and the chemical world to be the best at their jobs.
The key thing to remember is that biochemistry is the chemistry of the living world . Plants, animals, single-celled organisms... They all use the same basic chemical compounds to live their lives. Biochemistry is not about the cells or the organisms. It's about the smallest parts of those organisms, the molecules. It's also about the cycles that happen to create those compounds.
Those cycles that repeat over and over are the things that allow living creatures to survive on Earth. It could be the constant process of photosynthesis in plants that creates sugars or the building of complex proteins in the cells of your body. Every cycle has a place and they are just one building block that helps organisms live. In each of those cycles, molecules are needed and changed. It's one big network of activity where each piece relies on all of the others.

As one of the most dynamic areas of science, biochemistry has led to improved medicines and diagnostic agents, new ways of controlling disease, and greater understanding of the chemical factors that control our general health and well-being. The Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry is appropriate for students pursuing advanced degrees in biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics as well as in the biomedical fields and health professions. Spotlight On... Undergraduate research is not only a valuable experience for the student intending to pursue a career in science, but also for those intending to enter programs in the health professions. At Stanford, our joint admissions program in the biosciences is based on a unique "home program" concept, which means that you may enter the small and close-knit Department of Biochemistry while reserving the opportunity to rotate through several labs during your first year before selecting your thesis advisor and program. Ph.D. Program The Department of Biochemistry offers a Ph.D. program which begins in the Autumn Quarter of each year. The program of study is designed to prepare students for productive careers in biochemistry; its emphasis is training in research, and each student works closely with members of the staff. In addition to the requirement for a Ph.D. dissertation based on original research, students are required to complete six advanced courses in biochemistry and related areas, and at least three of these courses must be taken in the Department of Biochemistry. Understanding Fundamental Biological Questions Straight Lab Two features about our Department are especially noteworthy. First, we share all of our space and major equipment. Thus, students and postdocs from different groups are intermixed. This enhances interactions at all levels and guarantees equality in terms of access to all resources and equipment. Second, we work hard to maintain a collegial, cooperative and supportive environment.
