The Faculty of Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (UofT) in Canada have instigated a joint initiative to foster closer ties between the two universities and to give the students from these faculties the exciting opportunity to travel and study in different academic environments. In the first instance, the initiative involves Minor Programmes in Environmental Biology and Environmental Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry has coordinated the Environmental Chemistry Minor with the Department of Chemistry and Centre for Environment at UofT. As part of this programme students from the Faculty of Science will travel to the UofT in the 2nd Semester of their third year to study modules towards the Environmental Chemistry Minor. Aim of the Environmental Chemistry minor program The Environmental Chemistry minor program focuses on developing an understanding of the chemical impacts of humankind's activities on the soil, air, and water. Emphasis is given to developing analytical skills and a mechanistic understanding of the subject.

We apply organic analytical chemistry to the understanding of environmental problems. Almost all of our work uses gas chromatographic mass spectrometry for the analysis of trace levels of potentially toxic environmental pollutants. Specific research areas include: atmospheric transport of halogenated compounds, rate of reactions of pollutants with OH and O3,anthropogenic organic pollutants in and around the Great Lakes, and emerging environmental contaminants such as PBDE's.

    Graduate Program in Environmental Engineering
    Environmental Chemistry
Our understanding of the fate and transport of pollutants and of long-term impacts of humans on the environment is limited by an incomplete understanding of environmental chemistry. Environmental chemistry seeks to apply the principles of physical chemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, electrochemistry, and analytical chemistry to the complex milieus encountered outside the laboratory. A host of environmental problems today are not confined to any one medium (air, soil, water) but are characterized by dynamic transfers among media. The interdisciplinary study of environmental chemistry aims to prepare students to understand the fundamental principles governing pollutant transport and transformation in all environmental settings. Further, a major thrust in environmental research is pollution prevention, the changing of industrial and social practices so as to prevent pollution and obviate the need for environmental remediation and end-of-pipe treatments. Pollution prevention requires an in-depth knowledge of environmental chemistry to define what constitutes "safe" emissions, and to search for new synthesis pathways that use environmentally-friendly starting materials. The focus on chemistry is not intended to minimize the role of physical and biological processes, but rather to further our limited understanding of the chemical principles that, together with physical and biological processes, determine the environmental conditions in which we must find a sustainable way to live.

See the list on About this website We are starting with GCSE-level experiments.
    Experiments
    • The density of carbon dioxide The density of carbon dioxide relative to air is illustrated by pouring carbon dioxide gas from a flask over a burning candle, which is promptly extinguished. The Greenhouse Effect The role of atmospheric gases, in particular carbon dioxide, in ‘trapping’ radiation energy, causing a rise in the Earth’s temperature – the greenhouse effect – can be demonstrated using a powerful lamp. Acid in the air This activity explores the corrosion of metals in air, including the effect of sulfur dioxide in air as a pollutant. This can be followed by an investigation into ways of preventing corrosion of metals by acidic pollutants. Neutralisation – ‘curing acidity’ Simple experiment to show the pH and temperature changes when an acidic solution is neutralised by the addition of slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) or limestone (calcium carbonate).

    - Kathy Kaiser, CTL-Thompson, Inc. Environmental Chemistry Services is a testing laboratory that is committed to helping clients complete projects with confidence. How do we do that? By being accountable to your deadlines and producing the most accurate data possible, our clients are assured fast delivery and precise results. We deliver accuracy - and that prevents the costly mistakes that can result from poor data. All lab tests are not created equal. In an ideal world, all lab testing companies would deliver accurate results - after all, isn't that what you pay them for? The reality is that many labs charge low prices - but at a high cost. They often miss critical deadlines. Or deliver unreliable data - and that can force a company like yours to spend more time and money fixing mistakes. Don't settle for less than absolute precision.

Following its amalgamation with ENTSORGA, IFAT has celebrated a successful premiere and established itself firmly as the world’s leading trade fair for environmental technology. This is seen on the one hand in strong interest from visitors from abroad, their proportion rising from 33 percent of the total at the last IFAT to 40 percent this year. And on the other hand in a broadening of the international spread among the exhibitors, with 37 percent of the total coming from outside Germany this year, as compared to 32 percent last time.
Dr Johannes F. Kirchhoff, Chairman of the Advisory Board of IFAT ENTSORGA and Managing Partner of FAUN Umwelttechnik: "IFAT ENTSORGA has more than done justice to its new role as the World's Leading Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Waste and Raw Materials Management. What was particularly noticeable was the high numbers of international visitors." Peter Kurth, President of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Entsorgungs-, Wasser- und Rohstoffwirtschaft e.V. (BDE – Federation of the German Waste, Water and Raw Materials Management Industry) added: "The waste, water and recycling sector has welcomed the extended concept of the fair. We were particularly pleased with the strong international interest."
Over the five days of IFAT ENTSORGA, around 110,000 trade visitors from over 185 countries (IFAT 2008: 119,476 from 170 countries) came to the event. After Germany, the top ten countries of origin for visitors were, in order: Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, the Russian Federation, the Netherlands and France.
