Mathematical chemistry is the area of research engaged in the novel and nontrivial applications of mathematics to chemistry; it concerns itself principally with the mathematical modeling of chemical phenomena. Mathematical chemistry has also sometimes been called computer chemistry , but should not be confused with computational chemistry Major areas of research in mathematical chemistry include chemical graph theory, which deals with topics such as the mathematical study of isomerism and the development of topological descriptors or indices which find application in quantitative structure-property relationships ; chemical aspects of group theory, which finds applications in stereochemistry and quantum chemistry ; and topological aspects of chemistry.

Mathematical Chemistry - Studies from Lanzhou University in the area of mathematical chemistry published
2010 SEP 3 - (VerticalNews.com) "A general approach is proposed to elucidate the topological characteristics of molecules with the shape of polyhedral links," scientists in Lanzhou, People's Republic of China report. "For an arbitrary polyhedral graph, four classes of polyhedral links can be obtained by applying the operation of 'X-tangle covering' to the related reduced sets. The relationships between the W-polynomial of a polyhedral graph and the HOMFLY polynomial of each kind of polyhedral links are established," wrote S.Y. Our faculty work very hard at providing students with unique opportunities. Motivated students interested in teaching or applying their abilities can serve as tutors in our Math Lab or assistants in our laboratory courses. These opportunities also include the opportunity to do undergraduate research. Speaking of research, our departmental website provides many examples of faculty involvement in research. Available opportunities include astronomy, learning mathematics with technology, and chemistry with lasers. Our research opportunities in mathematics are also top notch and include computational mathematics, theoretical mathematics and mathematics education. Other undergraduate and graduate research opportunities include cancer research or work in the area of sensor technology thus allowing students the opportunity to make a significant difference in the world that they live in. Many of our students who participate in these research projects participate in student conferences with several winning awards in competitions held at these meetings.

Web site: http://www.clmc.bas.bg ABSTRACT A system of three starting hypotheses, concerning the different evolutionary stages in the development of scientific branches and sciences is formulated. Using these hypotheses the particular problem for geometrization of the language of chemistry is formulated and grounded in a general form. The way for solving this problem is outlined by formulating a system of four basic problems to be solved during the next evolutionary stage of the development of the language of chemistry. Several aspects of these system of problems are briefly discussed in order to clarify their meaning and to introduce the main context needed. The main results, presented in detail in the monograph [1], are briefly reviewed. INTRODUCTION The main aims of this paper are: (1) to formulate and ground the problem of geometrization of the language of chemistry in a general form and to outline the way of its solution in a set of four basic problems; (2) to present briefly some results discussed in detail in [1].
