  • NMRShiftDB
NMRShiftDB is a web database for organic structures and their nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) spectra. It allows for spectrum prediction (currently only for carbon) as well as for searching spectra, structures and other properties. Last not least, it features peer-reviewed submission of datasets by its users. The NMRShiftDB software is open source, the data is published under an open content license.

  • Rolling baseline? Strange lineshapes? Go to Michigan State University's NMR Artifacts pages. There is also a comprehensive Basics of NMR document available at the Center for Imaging Science, Rochester Institute of Technology. If you haven't used any NMR spectrometers at the NMR Centre before.
Come down to room G48 or G42 in the Chemistry Faculties building, and ask Chris or Peta to arrange a training session for you. Even if you have used Varian spectrometers before, our setup here is likely to be slightly different, so in the long run you will save yourself time by having a short lesson. More information is available in the introduction to the NMR Centre.

Experimental examples Due to large quadrupole moment of iodine high-resolution spectra can not be obtained for covalent compounds. Most investigations were done on highly symmetric ions, such as I or IO , and were destined to kinetics and equilibrium constants measurements, to examine solvation processes and to study anion binding to large molecules. It is the sensitivity of qudrupolar relaxation to molecular and ionic surrounding, that made it possible to obtain a detailed insight into ion-ion pairing processes involving iodide anions. In some cases quadrupole relaxation has become a very useful method for the study of I interactions with other molecules.

B NMR Chemical Shifts
(Relative to BF Et O)
Common Boron Chemical Shifts
The following collection of B NMR chemical shifts is a selected compilation of representative organoborane and boron compounds that we believe would be of interest to the organoborane community and to my research group at San Diego State University. There are a variety of types of borane compounds that are absent from this compilation, including the carboranes, metal complexes, etc. While we have made a reasonable effort to ensure the accuracy of this data, errors are probably inevitable. Corrections and additions of important types of boranes are most welcome. Please email along with your additions, corrections or comments here: tcole@sciences.sdsu.edu
General Comments on the Boron Chemical Shifts
Coordination The addition of a ligand or base to the empty p-orbital on boron results in an upfield shift as compared to the tricoordinate borane. This effect is also seen with coordinating solvents such as THF.
