Organic Chemistry
An updated version of this lesson is available at Visionlearning: Organic Chemistry How do we fit into this universe that we just described? To understand life on Earth, we must first understand organic chemistry. Organic chemicals (also known as hydrocarbons) contain carbon bonded to hydrogen (some also contain other elements). Because of the unique bonding properties of carbon, there are millions of different organic chemicals. Each one has unique properties. There are organic chemicals that make up your hair, your skin, even your fingernails. All life as we know it is made up of organic compounds. Why is carbon such a special element? Let's look at its chemistry in a little more detail.
Carbon (C) appears in the 2nd row of the periodic table and has atomic number of 6. Given our discussion of electron shells it is easy to see that carbon has 4 electrons in its valence shell. Since carbon needs 8 electrons to fill its valence shell, it forms 4 bonds with other atoms (each bond consisting of one of carbon's electrons and one of the bonding atom's). Every valence electron participates in bonding, thus a carbon atom's bonds will be distributed evenly over the atom's surface. These bonds form a tetrahedron, as illustrated below: An organic molecule (hydrocarbon) is formed when carbon bonds to hydrogen. The simplest hydrocarbon consists of 4 hydrogen atoms bonded to a carbon atom (called methane):

Organicus liquor regius
24 October 2010 - Physicial organic chemistry
Aqua regia is an inorganic mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid well known to dissolve noble metals like gold. A group of researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have now come up with an organic solvent - a mixture of pyridine and thionyl chloride that also dissolves gold palladium and silver but not platinum (Lin et al. DOI ). A typical dissolution rate is 0.3 mol/m /hr. The authors call their own invention of unprecedented scientific significance and kindly suggest a name for the new solvent: Organicus liquor regius.
As with aqua regia, to state that the metal is dissolved is misleading, rather gold is oxidized to the Au(III)Cl ion. Thionyl chloride itself is unable to do this but the charge-transfer complex with pyridine can. The researchers struggle to identify the counterion. They do find 4-chloropyridine and then pyridine oligomers which also explains the viscosity increase but no experimental evidence for reduced sulfur. Only tucked away in the supporting information, a plausible almost-balanced equation is presented.
Dry solvent myths
19 October 2010 - In the laboratory
It is one of these chores in the organic chemistry laboratory: drying wet solvents . Now do not say solvents are supposed to be wet, chemists simply want to dry out the water present in the solvent because it interferes with whatever they intend to do with it. Williams and Lawson (

When you drive up to the pump at some gas stations you are faced with a variety of choices. You can buy "leaded" gas or different forms of "unleaded" gas that have different octane numbers. As you filled the tank, you might wonder, "What is 'leaded' gas, and why do they add lead to gas?" Or, "What would I get for my money if I bought premium gas, with a higher octane number?" You then stop to buy drugs for a sore back that has been bothering you since you helped a friend move into a new apartment. Once again, you are faced with choices (see the figure below). You could buy aspirin, which has been used for almost a hundred years. Or Tylenol, which contains acetaminophen. Or a more modern pain-killer, such as ibuprofen. While you are deciding which drug to buy, you might wonder, "What is the difference between these drugs?," and even, "How do they work?" You then drive to campus, where you sit in a "plastic" chair to eat a sandwich that has been wrapped in "plastic," without worrying about why one of these plastics is flexibile while the other is rigid. While you're eating, a friend stops by and starts to tease you about the effect of your diet on the level of cholesterol in your blood, which brings up the questions, "What is cholesterol?" and "Why do so many people worry about it?"

"an exceptional text..."
"Sorrell writes well, and has a knack for lucid explanations. He uses excellent examples and well designed exercises to make his points. The sections integrating chapter topics with biochemical examples are the best that I have seen. My students have found his book a pleasure to read."
Douglas Dykes, Colorado University
"Student response to the first edition of Sorrell's Organic Chemistry has been overwhelmingly positive. I expect response to the streamlined second edition to be even better."
René Boeré, The University of Lethbridge "The Second Edition of Sorrell's Organic Chemistry is working well for our course on organic chemistry with a biological emphasis. It is a great combination of rigor and easy reading ." Martin Semmelhack, Princeton University " Sorrell's Organic Chemistry is a breath of fresh air. It is a truly distinctive approach to the discipline that emphasizes the mechanistic similarities of processes rather than presenting them in the standard functional group approach."
