Preface
The Beilstein Dictionary (German/English) has been compiled by the scientific staff of the Beilstein Institute to facilitate the use of Basic Series and Supplementary Series I to IV by those Handbook users whose native language is not German. With a total of about 2,100 entries, it contains most German words occurring in the Beilstein Handbook, as well as common abbreviations, alphabetically listed with their English equivalents. It is our hope that this glossary will prove of assistance to the non German-speaking user of Beilstein, in overcoming any language difficulties which may be encountered.
Notes for the User
The English equivalents of German words appearing in the Beilstein Handbook are chosen such that in each case the most usual translation in the context of the Handbook of Organic Chemistry is listed first, followed by other possibilities which can also occur

    CEM 221, Organic Chemistry I
An overview of organic chemistry, with emphasis on nomenclature, structure-reactivity relationships and applications. The laboratory portion of the course emphasizes basic techniques of separation and analysis used in organic chemistry. Proper procedure and waste disposal will be included in the laboratory portion of the course so that the student may become familiar with standard laboratory safety practice. Three lectures, one three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite: CEM 122 (General Inorganic Chemistry).

    CEM222, Organic Chemistry II
This course is more in-depth than CEM 221, concentrating on two important skills in organic chemistry: organic structure determination and organic synthesis. The first several weeks introduce the use of spectroscopic methods to identify organic compounds. The remainder of the course focuses on understanding organic reactions and using them to construct new molecules. Three lectures, one three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite: CEM 221.

    Organic Chemistry
Organic chemistry at ASU is interdisciplinary and exciting. Collaborations exist with colleagues in biochemistry, physical chemistry and in the engineering, physics and biology departments. A general theme of many of the research groups is that new and interesting molecules are synthesized, which are then used in original and useful applications. ASU researchers are developing new anti-cancer drugs, artificial photosynthetic reaction centers and ion pumps, novel proteins, photoenzymes and compounds for molecular electronics . Students are involved in the entire scope of the projects, from molecular design and synthesis through to the application. In this way, the ASU research and education process is broader than in programs where a single discipline or approach is emphasized. Students have access to modern equipment in each faculty member's labs and excellent departmental facilities including X-Ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy, and solution and solid state NMR. Organic chemistry
Organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry dealing with carbon compounds. In all branches of chemistry, atoms are formed from a positively charged nucleus surrounded by negatively charged electrons which are located in orbitals around the nucleus (3). Different orbitals have different shapes, and different energy levels. The lowest energy arrangement of an atom is called its ground-state electron configuration, and can be predicted because the lowest energy levels are filled first; there can be only two electrons per level; and if two or more empty orbitals of equal energy exist, one electron occupies each until all orbitals are half full (5). S orbitals are spherical and p orbitals are shaped like a dumbbell. There are two basic types of chemical bonds: ionic bonds, usually found in inorganic salts, and resulting from the unlike charges of the atoms in the molecules; and covalent bonds found in organic molecules , which involve the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between atoms (7). Energy flows out of a chemical system when a bond is formed. Atoms bond together because the compound they form is more stable than the separate atoms. Electron sharing occurs when the orbitals of two atoms overlap. Head-on covalent bonds are called ? bonds, and covalent bonds formed by sideways overlap of p orbitals are called ? bonds.

The University of Minnesota has a long and rich tradition in the field of organic chemistry. Many of our faculty have received recognition for excellence in research, and our graduates have gone on to distinguish themselves in industrial, academic, and government settings. Our goal is to provide organic chemistry graduate students with a diversified background, and most importantly, a thorough understanding of the principles. This is accomplished through an excellent offering of formal courses, a vigorous weekly seminar program, and outstanding research opportunities. The expertise of the faculty is wide ranging so that in addition to core courses, we offer a number of courses which explore the cutting edge of research in disciplines like organometallic, polymer, synthetic, bioorganic, physical organic, natural product, and solid-state chemistry.
