From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search A variety of topics involved with pharmacology, including neuropharmacology, renal pharmacology, human metabolism, intracellular metabolism, and intracellular regulation. Pharmacology (from Greek pharmakon , "drug"; and -logia ) is the branch of medicine and biology concerned with the study of drug action. More specifically, it is the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function. If substances have medicinal properties, they are considered pharmaceuticals . The field encompasses drug composition and properties, interactions toxicology , therapy, and medical applications and antipathogenic capabilities. The two main areas of pharmacology are pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics . The former studies the effects of the drugs on biological systems, and the latter the effects of biological systems on the drugs. In broad terms, pharmacodynamics discusses the interactions of chemicals with biological receptors , and pharmacokinetics discusses the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of chemicals from the biological systems. Pharmacology is not synonymous with

Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacology
The St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs specializing in pharmacology. Pharmacology is a broad discipline that encompasses a wide range of research areas.
The college has active basic science laboratories in areas ranging from cardiovascular pharmacology to neuropharmacology; with many areas of clinical interest represented. Masters students enrolled in the thesis option plan and Ph.D. students receive rigorous training in coursework as well as laboratory research.
Pharmacology faculty are all active scientists involved in the training of graduate students both in the classroom and in the laboratory. Many pharmacology faculty are funded by grants from the National Institute of Health, as well as other government and private agencies. Graduates of the program in pharmacology are prepared to assume research or regulatory responsibilities in the pharmaceutical industry, government or academia.

Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences
A Message from the Director The Department is proud of its history. Founded in 1893 by John J. Abel, the "Father of Pharmacology" in the United States, the Johns Hopkins Pharmacology Department's advances over the years have included the first crystals of insulin, the first measurement of a drug level in a human, discovery of both the insulin and opiate receptors, and discovery of a cancer preventive principle in broccoli. Many of these and other key contributions have been made by students pursuing advanced degrees in our Department. We are also proud of our track record in student training. Many of our graduates have gone on to become academic and industrial leaders in biomedical research throughout the country and world. Not resting on our laurels, we are continuing to maintain our strong commitment to creative scholarship and education.
Each of our faculty is engaged in cutting-edge research spanning many areas including: chemical biology, immunology, virology, cancer, and neuroscience. We believe the opportunities for discovering new drug targets and developing novel therapeutics have never been brighter and will continue to be lustrous for the century ahead. The Johns Hopkins University and School of Medicine provide an excellent scientific environment, with a friendly and supportive atmosphere, filled with energetic students, faculty, fellows, and staff. We hope you take the opportunity to review the research programs of faculty in the Department and that you will contact us if you want more information or wish to arrange a visit.

Hello, Welcome to my professional homepage. You will find here general information about me and my research, as well as background information concerning the topic of my thesis. I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I do...
The Role of Thrombin in Lipopolysaccharide-induced Liver Injury. Lipopolysaccharides-induced liver injury in vivo is characterized by a predominantly mid-zonal multifocal hepatocellular necrosis with neutrophil accumulation in the sinusoid, and formation of fibrin and platelet clumps ( ). A marked hyperbilirubinemia and an elevation of the plasma concentration of liver specific enzymes reflects the increased inability of the organ to perform its normal functions. The administration of anticoagulants like warfarin and heparin ( ) protects against the onset of liver damage, despite the fact that other markers of LPS activity, mainly increased TNF-alpha in the plasma and accumulation of neutrophils and platelets in the sinusoids, are still present. The observation of the protective effect of anticoagulants as well as the decrease in plasma fibrinogen and the accumulation of platelets in the liver that normally follow LPS administration suggested that the coagulation system was intricately linked to the hepatotoxicity (

DES: Pharmacology, Data Indicating Lack of Efficacy for Prevention of Miscarriage, Clinical Indications, and Current Uses
This section of CDC's DES Update describes the pharmacology of diethylstilbestrol (DES), data supporting that DES was ineffective in preventing miscarriage, and the clinical indications and uses of DES. In addition, you'll also find a complete listing of brand names under which DES was sold. Pharmacology Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a nonsteroidal estrogen, was first synthesized in 1938 . It was the first synthetic estrogen to be discovered. Never patented, it was marketed under more than 200 brand names . Several related forms were also marketed. Closely related cogeners include hexestrol, dienestrol, benzestrol, and promethestrol. Data Indicating Lack of Efficacy for Prevention of Miscarriage A prospective, blinded, placebo controlled study reported in 1953 found that DES was ineffective in preventing miscarriage
