          • Metaphysics : What sorts of things exist? What is the nature of those things? Do some things exist independently of our perception? What is the nature of space and time? What is the nature of thought and thinking? What is it to be a person? What is it to be conscious? Is there a god? Epistemology : Is knowledge possible? If it is possible, what is it? How do we come to know what we know? Can we know that there are other minds? How? Ethics : Is there a difference between morally right and wrong actions (or values, or institutions)? If so, what is that difference? Which actions are right, and which wrong? Are they necessarily based on value? Are they divine commands or is there something else that makes them "just right?" Is ethical analysis dependent on the situation? Is it relative or absolute? In general or particular terms, how should I live? How should we live? Logic : What makes for good thinking? When can I say for sure that something just doesn't make sense? How can I think critically about complicated arguments?

Philosophy
What this handout is about
This handout discusses common types of philosophy assignments and strategies and resources that will help you write your philosophy papers.
What is philosophy, and why do we study it?
Philosophy is the practice of making and assessing arguments. An argument is a set of statements (called premises) that work together to support another statement (the conclusion). Making and assessing arguments can help us get closer to understanding the truth. At the very least, the process helps make us aware of our reasons for believing what we believe, and it enables us to use reason when we discuss our beliefs with other people. Your philosophy teacher wants to help you learn to make strong arguments and to assess the arguments other people make. top
Elements of philosophy papers

Ancient Greek Philosophy
The Ancient Greek philosophers have played a pivotal role in the shaping of the western philosophical tradition. This article surveys the seminal works and ideas of key figures in the Ancient Greek philosophical tradition from the Presocratics to the Neoplatonists. It highlights their main philosophical concerns and the evolution in their thought from the sixth century BCE to the sixth century CE. The Ancient Greek philosophical tradition broke away from a mythological approach to explaining the world, and it initiated an approach based on reason and evidence. Initially concerned with explaining the entire cosmos, the Presocratic philosophers strived to identify its single underlying principle. Their theories were diverse and none achieved a consensus, yet their legacy was the initiation of the quest to identify underlying principles.

The Origin of philosophy The Attributes of Mythic/Mythopoeic Thought - How was Greek philosophy different from what came before? Or was it different?
    http://www.friesian.com/greek.htm
The Origin of Philosophy: The Attributes of Mythic/Mythopoeic Thought
The pioneering work on this subject was The Intellectual Adventure of Ancient Man, An Essay on Speculative Thought in the Ancient Near East by Henri Frankfort, H.A. Frankfort, John A. Wilson, Thorkild Jacobsen, and William A. Irwin (University of Chicago Press, 1946, 1977 also once issued by Penguin as Before Philosophy ). Related ideas can also be found in Henri Frankfort's great Ancient Egyptian Religion How was Greek philosophy different from what came before? Or was it different? Even though "philosophy" is a Greek word, from , "to love," and , "wisdom," perhaps it was just a continuation of how people had always thought about things anyway. After all, it is not uncommon now for items of Egyptian literature, like the Instruction of Ptah.h.otep , to be listed as Egyptian "philosophy." So if Greek philosophy is to be thought of as different, there must be ways of specifying that difference. Similarly, if Greek philosophy is to be compared with Indian and Chinese philosophy, there must be something that they have in common, and that can be mutually contrasted with pre-philosophical thought. As it happens, Greek philosophy, and Indian and Chinese

Notre Dame Center for Philosophy of Religion
Welcome The primary mission of the Center for Philosophy of Religion is to promote work on topics in the philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, and to encourage the development and exploration of specifically Christian and theistic philosophy. We also aim to foster dialogue between the disciplines of Philosophy and Theology on topics of mutual interest, and to disseminate the results of scholarly research on these issues both within the academy and to a wider, non-academic audience. We carry out our mission by hosting residential research fellowships and a weekly discussion group, and by organizing and funding academic conferences, seminars, course programs, popular and scholarly lectures, and debates.
